About this product

Product Information

The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it -- from garden seeds to Scripture -- is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family's tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa. This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

Reviews
"There are few ambitious, successful and beautiful novels. Lucky for us, we have one now, in Barbara Kingsolver's The Poisonwood Bible . . . this awed reviewer hardly knows where to begin." -- Jane Smiley, Washington Post Book World "Fully realized, richly embroidered, triumphant." -- Newsweek "Kingsolver's powerful new book is actually an old-fashioned 19th-century novel, a Hawthornian tale of sin and redemption and the 'dark necessity' of history." -- Michiko Kakutani, New York Times "A powerful new epic . . . She has with infinitely steady hands worked the prickly threads of religion, politics, race, sin and redemption into a thing of terrible beauty." -- Los Angeles Times Book Review "Powerful . . . Kingsolver is a gifted magician of words." -- Time "Beautifully written . . . Kingsolver's tale of domestic tragedy is more than just a well-told yarn . . . Played out against the bloody backdrop of political struggles in Congo that continue to this day, it is also particularly timely." -- People "Tragic, and remarkable. . . . A novel that blends outlandish experience with Old Testament rhythms of prophecy and doom." -- USA Today "The book's sheer enjoyability is given depth by Kingsolver's insight and compassion for Congo, including its people, and their language and sayings." -- Boston Globe "Compelling, lyrical and utterly believable." -- Chicago Tribune, There are few ambitious, successful and beautiful novels. Lucky for us, we have one now, in Barbara Kingsolver's The Poisonwood Bible . . . this awed reviewer hardly knows where to begin.

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!

  • Great story and the writing is superb

I first read this book in 2005 when I was in Zimbabwe. I truly enjoyed it then, but found it a bit too long. I just finished re-reading it and I think it is one of the most beautifully written books. It captures both the essence of Congo and the great difficulties that foreigners, especially missionaries, experience. It is incredibly realistic and engaging. The characters and character development are superb. It's a long book but very entertaining and a MUST read

  • Compelling Family Saga, Sobering Picture of Colonialism

Barbara Kingsolver's novel, "The Poisonwood Bible," transports the reader to the Congo in the late 1950s, following Nathan Price, an evangelical Baptist minister, and his family. Their fate becomes interwoven with that of the country during three turbulent decades. The book is a compelling family saga, a sobering picture of the horrors of fanatical fundamentalism and an insightful view of an exploited country crushed by colonialism and manipulated by a bastion of democracy. Nathan Price is a sanctimonious, foolhardy fanatic determined to convert the natives to Christianity, a plan that is doomed from the start by Nathan's self-righteousness. The story arc develops through the alternating, first-person points of view of Orleanna Price- Nathan's powerless ...

  • Excellent

I didn't read this book years ago when it first came out. I am glad I waited to read it now when things are so politically unstable, this story and the history is so important to what is happing in our lives today. Highly recommend.

  • The Poisonwood Bible

This was a fiction book with a historical background. It was about a man who took his family (wife and 4 daughters) so he could to be a missionary in Africa. I liked that the chapters were written by the daughters and how they liked or disliked Africa. It was a slow read but, the last 1/3 of the book explained how politics and its corruption effected the people of Africa. If there is a theme or moral of the book it would be that "outsiders" can not understand nor should they try to change a culture. It had many differt levels of thought.
