Reviews
Karl Barth and the Study of the Religious Enlightenment provides a thought-provoking approach to the fundamental gulf that separates academic history from academic theology. Jimenez aptly identifies that the tools of both disciplines independently seem unable fully to flesh out the importance of a figure like Karl Barth to Christianity in the twentieth century. He also contends that Barth is the answer to the conundrum he presents: If we view our interaction with the figures from the past as a direct confrontation against the historical other in the present, we are more able to embrace the multifaceted context and outlooks of our subjects., For too long Karl Barth has been confined to the church by both advocates and critics. Michael Jimenez's study of Barth succeeds in highlighting his contributions not only as a theologian but as a public intellectual historian, whose dialectical approach to history--which sees both past and present, history and theology, in a dialogical unity--results in a nuanced and sensitive approach to the Enlightenment. We can be grateful to Jimenez for highlighting this often ignored aspect of Barth's legacy., Michael Jimenez' decision to pursue a study of Karl Barth as an intellectual historian and not simply as a Christian doctrinal theologian has resulted in a work that makes a significant contribution both to Barth scholarship and to contemporary Enlightenment historiography. His goal is to examine the manner in which Barth practiced intellectual history through his reading of the Enlightenment period and to demonstrate that he had well-developed historiographical commitments. His location of Barth in the Basel school of historiography together with his examination of Barth's historical work on the Enlightenment period permits Jimenez to make a compelling case for Barth's major contribution to theology as a serious and influential intellectual historian. Indeed, Jimenez has convincingly shown the significance of history in Barth's work; that history really matters to Barth; that it is important to take his historical writings seriously on their own terms; and that his mature theological work is best understood and interpreted in the light of his work as an intellectual historian. This study makes a notable contribution in the context of widespread neglect of Barth's historical work amongst Barth scholars and academic historians alike. Jimenez's close reading of key samples of Barth's work is an exemplary demonstration of how and why the theological life and work of Karl Barth continues to be vibrantly engaged by theologians and others well into the 21st century, a half century after his passing., While Karl Barth is recognized as one of the most significant theologians of the twentieth century, the character and interpretation of his thought often leads to the conclusion that he has little to say beyond the confines of the church. In this careful study of Barth's reading of the Enlightenment Michael Jimenez develops the thesis that such a view significantly shortchanges Barth's significance as a public theologian whose work is deeply "modern" while also raising perennial challenges to its perceived hegemony that are as significant in the contemporary setting as they were in his own times. A valuable contribution to scholarship on the Enlightenment as well as the interpretation of Barth's theological and intellectual project.

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!
