King-Sized Collection of Kinks Classics!
The Kinks are such a charming band, and this is such a great album... that I almost don't know what to say. The overall musical and cultural impact of this LP, and now CD, is nearly overwhelming. This album doesn't include their earliest hits, for which you should get the original albums, or one or two of their Greatest Hits comps. Basically, it's one man's vision (that man being John Mendelsohn) of Kinkdom, or rather a specific area or segment of Kinks history. It's drawn mainly from the Kinks late 60's singles, many of which were probably unfamiliar to most American listeners: with some never released before other than as singles, some never released in the USA in any format, and I believe a couple were never released before anywhere. If you love England, or always wanted to go there, ... The Kinks are such a charming band, and this is such a great album... that I almost don't know what to say. Great for Kink lovers and first-timers...
This was a band that was and still is highly underrated. Ray Davies is one of the best songwriters out there..as evidenced by many of the tracks on these CD's. Aside from the smash hit "Lola" (which regularly winds up in top 10 rock song lists of all time), Death of a Clown, Victoria, Sunny Afternoon, Apeman, Big Black Smoke, Village Green Preservation Society (very biting tune) & Polly (almost sounds like a Who song) are stand outs. Great liner notes as to how they've been viewed, troubles and controversy that has dogged them and how they've still remained popular. Sounds surprisingly good ! Nice collection. Includes the harder to find "Mindless Child of Motherhood" and "She's Got Everything". Most compilations do not have those 2 great songs. God save the Kinks

A worthy Compilation
The big feature of this collection is it will serve both the casual and dedicated Kinks fan. For the dedicated, they probably own everything they did but to have so many great tracks on 2 CD's makes listening convenient. For the casual fan, well you get to hear some great deeper tracks other than the hits of Sunny Afternoon, Waterloo Sunset and Shangrila.
