A Good album, but not her greatest.
This is her eighth album, and is a bit slower paced than many of her earlier ones. I really like the jazzier songs like "Them There Eyes," "Sweet Georgia Brown" and "How High the Moon" as well as the slower paced "Black Coffee" and "God Bless the Child." As for her style, don't think of modern Jazz women like Diana Krall or Patricia Barber, think Aretha Franklin crossed with Ethel Merman, or a female Mel Torme. Okay, maybe that's a bit silly, but if you like the "Big Band" sound, you should like Ms. Schuur, especially her older material from the 80's. This album is from 1992, and while I haven't heard much of her later stuff, what I have heard tells me she's past her peak. Don't we all hate that?! I love this CD. The sound quality is fantastic at any volume. A fantastic set of classic old school standards from Gershwin, Hezog, Porter, Ellington and more The most beautiful soothing voice in the world backed up by a most excellent and very powerful big band. my favorite tacks "The man I Love" "God Bless The Child" "Round Midnight" "Body and Soul" "Black Coffee" "The Best Is Yet To Come" (And won't it be fine...)I love this CD. Diane Schuur created a CD that truly honors the great ladies of Jazz but still makes it her own .If you not already a fan the CD will inspired you the buy them all. From the bouncy Them There Eyes to soulful Black Coffee Diane Schuur will inspire you.
