About this product

Product Information

With the practiced eye of a traveler at large, E. Shaskan Bumas portrays characters struggling to define their relationships to each other and to their time. Whether scientists or artisans, punks or new-agers, single mothers or students, activists or children in harm's way, Bumas's characters fill these stories with heart and subversive humor. The Price of Tea in China depicts places as far-flung as a Manhattan ghetto and a provincial Chinese city through an exploration of human relationships that makes each location both foreign and familiar. In "Flag of Fire," an American teacher becomes caught up in the lives of students engaged in China's pro-democracy movement. "Your Cordially Requested Presence" reveals a man's humorous sufferings as he acts the part of fiance for a lesbian friend at her cousin's wedding. "The Attraction to Gravity" brings us a young man whose growing appreciation of his girlfriend's small daughter is threatened by her father's reappearance. In "Cupid's Carriers," a student chronicles college life in the era of punk rock through a journal that takes on a life of its own. In "Emerging," a neighborhood's web of its inhabitants is torn apart by a police riot, and in "Spare the Child," a man describes the unplanned pregnancy of his girlfriend with biting dislike.

Reviews
"These unusual stories are risky in their variety and generosity. They happen in cities, college dorms, and China in the middle of Tiananmen Square. . . . I loved reading these stories."--Grace Paley "Originality comes in so many colors. There is the originality which apes its original so slavishly it hopes to be taken for its model, and there is the originally whose tired and old hat has been freshly blacked, briskly brushed, and wildly feathered. But these stories by Bumas are the real rich original itself, and widen the mind at they delight the imagination."--William H. Gass, Washington University, St. Louis "The human portraits are so revealing to me that I have to remind myself that the stories are made, that they are artistic renditions of a virtual reality."--Carolivia Herron, author of Thereafter Johnnie "The stories in this smashing debut are so wonderfully varied in style, tone, and content that it is hoped Bumas never settles into a particular groove or literary niche. . . . These are insightful, acidic, jolting, often hilarious works of fiction."--Booklist "In this haunting debut, Bumas explores the defining of relationships ad how the quality of human intimacy reveals much about the places we call home. All eight stories in this collection lend an ethereal element to situations that a first glance seem familiar, depicting men and women attracted and confused by friends and lovers and who find themselves equally lost in their given time and place. . . . Bumas woos with strong characters, wry tones, political complexity, and a unique voice."--Kirkus Reviews

Product is 95% alike picture but a little more blurry. Controller play well but had a notice from psn that my joypad wasn't authentic and could by problematic🤷‍♂️ no trouble so far! Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!
