About this product

Product Information

Winner of the 2016 EDGAR, AGATHA, MACAVITY and H.R.F.KEATING crime writing awards, this real-life detective story investigates how Agatha Christie and colleagues in a mysterious literary club transformed crime fiction. Detective stories of the Twenties and Thirties have long been stereotyped as cosily conventional. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Golden Age of Murder tells for the first time the extraordinary story of British detective fiction between the two World Wars. A gripping real-life detective story, it investigates how Dorothy L. Sayers, Anthony Berkeley, Agatha Christie and their colleagues in the mysterious Detection Club transformed crime fiction. Their work cast new light on unsolved murders whilst hiding clues to their authors' darkest secrets, and their complex and sometimes bizarre private lives. Crime novelist and current Detection Club President Martin Edwards rewrites the history of crime fiction with unique authority, transforming our understanding of detective stories, and the brilliant but tormented men and women who wrote them.

Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!

  • Those who love British mysteries of the 30's will love this

The author is a respected mystery story writer, was elected to the Detection Club, and is the historian of the esteemed organization. Here he reveals the history of the beginnings of the Club back in the early '30's with mini-bios of the founders and members, including Anthony Berkeley, Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, E.C. Bentley, the Coles, and many others. Fascinating stuff since the author reveals much of the wizards behind the curtains of the novels and stories that were produced in the glory days of the Club. He talks about the various works that were produced during this period, and leaves you wanting to seek out used book stores for some of the now out of print publications. The book does not move in a straight temporal line to recount history, but meanders back and forth as ...

  • Must Have Reference Book of the Golden Age of Mystery!

Probably the best overview of the Golden Age Mystery authors and their works I have seen. Edwards handles an extremely large amount of information expertly. Reveals little known stories about The Detection Club, formed in the '30's by the genre's best mystery writers. So well done I am purchasing a copy for a friend!
