About this product

Product Information

All Things Medieval: An Encyclopedia of the Medieval World covers the widest definition of "medieval Europe" possible, not by covering history in the traditional, textbook manner of listing wars, leaders, and significant historic events, but by presenting detailed alphabetical entries that describe the artifacts of medieval Europe. By examining the hidden material culture and by presenting information about topics that few books cover-pottery, locks and keys, shoes, weaving looms, barrels, toys, pets, ink, kitchen utensils, and much more-readers get invaluable insights into the nature of life during that time period and area. The heartland European regions such as England, France, Italy, and Germany are covered extensively, and information regarding the objects of regions such as Byzantium, Muslim Spain, and Scandinavia are also included. For each topic of material culture, the entry considers the full scope of the medieval period-roughly 5001450-to give the reader a historical perspective of related traditions or inventions and describes the craftsmen and tools that produced it.

Reviews
"The most hilarious book of its kind since John Irving's The Water-Method Man and A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole." --Des Moines Sunday Register "An utter delight. Ms. Willis's unique, engaging voice will carry you off to a place where chaos theory makes perfect sense, time travel is a REASONABLE mode of transport, and safeguarding the fate of humanity is a respectable day job." --Amanda Quick "Willis effortlessly juggles comedy of manners, chaos theory and a wide range of literary allusions [with a] near flawlessness of plot, character and prose." --Publishers Weekly (starred review) "I have long thought that Jerome K. Jerome's Three Men In A Boat is one of the highest points of Inimitable British Humor. I chuck≤ I gurg≤ I know those three men--to say nothing of the dog. And now I am convinced there was a woman concealed in that boat, too: Connie Willis." --Laurie R. Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!

I bought this book because Elma in my reading club reported on a book by Connie Willis. Elma loved CW and read everything she wrote. Willis writes a lot about time travel (or maybe only about time travel) and she bears investigation. In this book, the historians (as time travelers are called) go back to Canterbury Cathedral prior to its destruction during WWII. They are searching for an abomination called the Bishop's Bird Stump and trying to find out what happened to it. One of the historians is time-lagged and is sent back to Victorian England for a vacation. He ends up boating down the Thames and meeting the love of his life. (By the way, I have subsequently gotten a copy of Three Men in a Boat and am looking forward to it.) I think Willis is very clever but am not entirely sure if I ...

  • The title, "To Say Nothing of the Dog" was the best part.

I could not finish the book. It was the silliest book I have read since Greeneggs and Ham. I had wanted to see what the author did with hime travel, but I couldn't bare the continuous drivel.

  • To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis

This is simply one of the most enjoyable books I've ever read. Science fiction with a load of fun and a little romance thrown in. I highly recommend it.

  • For English Majors!!!

One of Connie Willis' more difficult books, I bought this book for an english major friend. Not for the short of attention.
