"Drawing on the monumental "Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary," [Crystal] surveys the development of vocabulary relating to 15 different subjects. Word nerds will enjoy dipping into the sections on drunkenness, death and the lavatory." - The Wall Street Journal "The words historical thesaurus may send children running to the hills, for fear they're likely to be bored to death by some fellow with a monocle. But they also describe the richest reference you've probably never heard of... And now there's [Words in Time and Place] a new book designed to introduce the masses to a treasure the English professors have been hoarding for themselves since it was published in 2009." - Time.com, I'm delighted to see the HTOED being put to such interesting and innovative use. With his customary verve and erudition, Crystal demonstrates how a thesaurus-based approach to meaning casts new light on the vast store of information in the alphabetical OED, and on the cultural context in which English has been used for the past 1300 years. As the introductory essays succinctly explain, the topics of the fifteen chapters, with their enticing titles, have beencarefully chosen both for their intrinsic interest and for the insights they give into the structure and purpose of HTOED and the development of English as a whole. This, plus the addition of intriguingnuggets of cultural and critical scholarship, results in a wholly fascinating compendium of linguistic and social information which should inspire everyone interested in the history of the English language., "Drawing on the monumental "Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary," [Crystal] surveys the development of vocabulary relating to 15 different subjects. Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!
