About this product

Product Information

These dramatic monologues are spoken by members of the German High Command--Adolf Hitler, Heinrich Himmler, Dr. Joseph Goebbels, Albert Speer, Hermann Goering--their wives and mistresses, during the last month of the European campaign of World War II. In language and forms that astonish, The Fuehrer Bunker reveals human beings at their worst--petty, pathetic, desperate.

Reviews
From Library Journal Eminent American poet-translator Snodgrass, who won the Pulitzer in 1960, offers the "complete cycle" of a work first published in 1977. With over 65 monologs by 15 speakers and a variety of supporting poems in collage format, Snodgrass achieves remarkable historical breadth. The action takes place in one month (April 1945) in the Berlin Bunker where Hitler and other Nazis died, and each doomed speaker has poetic forms appropriate to his or her character, e.g., Heinrich Himmler speaks in a memo-telegram style printed on graph paper and Magda Goebbels in rondeaux. Snodgrass's masterful language is graphic; his analysis of war and defeat and his interest in historical personages pushed to extremes of pain are compelling. Hitler, however, falls well short of Macbeth, and others, alternatively deluded and forlorn, are not so much tragic victims as willing accomplices to those who sacrifice everything in pursuit of power. Still, to hear these voices imaginatively re-created is purgative. Recommended for literature teachers.?Frank Allen, West Virginia State Coll., Institute Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Booklist Snodgrass' Fu{}hrer Bunker: A Cycle of Poems in Progress (1977) was staged by the American Place Theater, and indeed, both that cycle and this seem ideal for the stage. They portray a moment in history when drama lurched toward Grand Guignol, and the fate of nations lay in one small, reinforced concrete bunker. Snodgrass adeptly conjures the manic mental activity pervading Hitler's hideout and channels it into letters, snippets of folk songs, telegrams, and internal monologues. He touches on the experiences of an array of other characters, among them the Goebbels children, who play with guns and watch their father "read tales about heroes' noble deeds." Near the end, as Magda Goebbels must kill her own offspring and Martin Bormann loses his mind from panic, we share their desire for an end to the boredom, madness, and fear. Snodgrass expertly delves into each character and gives each a distinct voice and particular emotions. This is an astonishing work that lets us see with clarity the fall of the Third Reich--and wonder. Elizabeth Gunderson

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!
