Beethovens Dritte Sinfonie, genannt Eroica, z hlt unumstritten zu den bedeutendsten Werken des Komponisten. Sie beeinflusste die Gattung der Sinfonie im 19.Jahrhundert nachhaltig und leitete zugleich jene heroische Periode ein, in der Beethovens Schaffen seinen H hepunkt erreichte. Was eine Deutung des Werkes angeht tun sich jedoch viele Autoren schwer, die zum Gro teil widerspr chlichen biografischen Fakten und berlieferungen miteinander in Einklang zu bringen. Ist das Werk eine Hommage an Napoleon Bonaparte, dem Beethoven das Werk zun chst widmete? Oder liegt der Schl ssel zum Werk im Prometheus-Mythos, dem Titanen, der den G ttern das Feuer stahl um die unvollkommenen Menschen zu bilden und zu befreien? Bekannterma en zerriss Beethoven das Titelblatt mit der urspr nglichen Widmung entzwei, als er 1804 von Napoleons Kr nung zum selbsternannten Kaiser geh rt hat. Ab 1806 trug die Sinfonie schlie lich den Titel: Sinfonia Eroica. Composta per festeggiare il sovvenire di un grand Uomo. Wer ist mit diesem 'grand Uomo' gemeint? K nnte sich der Titel - im bertragenen Sinn - wohlm glich auch auf Beethoven selbst beziehen? Der Komponist als eigentlicher heroischer Held seiner Sinfonie? Dieser Ansatz kursiert zwar ebenfalls bereits seit l ngerem in der Musikwissenschaft, in dieser Studie erf hrt er innerhalb einer ausf hrlichen Wechselbeziehung von Biografie und Werk jedoch eine g nzlich neue Betrachtung.
