  • A fair camera for the experienced photographer

I am amazed that nobody mentions the plastic top and bottom plates! In fact I have read reviews where the author stated these were all metal, which is untrue. The back plate is mostly metal as are some of the subcomponents, but the rest is an uninspiring 2mm thick (and thinner) polycarbonate. (Older Ricoh's are indeed tanks.) Now I know this saves on weight but let's be honest and let the potential buyer know the facts so they can make up their own minds. It is a good manual camera; it does not have shutter speed or aperture priority, but recommends a manner of using the meter that mimics those functions. (As in; set the shutter speed where you want it and move the aperture ring until the meter oks the exposure, mimicking shutter priority. Or setting the aperture ring to the ...

  • Great mechanical camera at a great price.

I don't know who was the misinformed person that called this camera a "point and shoot", it is not. it is an old fashioned mechanical camera. The lens requires of manual focusing, like most cameras in the world in the 50's, with the great advantage that you are looking thru the lens, being old fashioned myself, I prefer to take my pictures looking thru the camera instead of watching the subject and composing the picture while looking at the tiny electronic screen in the back of the camera. If you know what you are doing, it gives you total control over the exposure, first you crank it to advance the film then you select the speed, then the aperture, you focus on the subject and you are ready to go. If the light meter works, great, you can use it as a guide, if not you do not need it, ...

  • good budget manual camera

Pro's: -lightweight -cheap -full manual SLR -many lenses can be got used at good prices - 1/2000 of sec. shutter speed! Con's: -not as sturdy as older model Summation: this is a great camera if you are looking for a no frills manual film camera, metering is pretty good for most situtations. It's cheap and just works. Recommended camera.

  • super workhorse and old dependable great for a beginner !!

Yes it is a tank and you have to wind it, has everyone forgot how to use their fingers. for the price the ricoh is a fantastic instructional camera for start up photog's. I personally use mine for a backup to my 500 dollar minolta that does every thing but kiss you goodnight. If i was to go back 38 years ago and was about to buy my first SLR i would have shelved the canon and got the ricoh. first of all it has the K mount that is one of the best systems out there. second it has the old pigo (plug in grind out)settings with a lighting go no-go light, up in the focus window. and third it is a excellent camera for the beginner or the semi-pro media shooter. I just recently got one so inexpensive that it made me blush.the shots are fine and look like what i shot no suprises like a total AF ...

  • Pentax Wanna be

I bought the KR-5 because it takes the Pentax K lenses I already have. It will be a back-up to my Pentax cameras. It is such a basic camera to learn how to take pictures. It has always been a good buy, even more used. I may give the KR-5 to my son when he gets the inclination for real photography (apart from the point and shoot digitals).
