About this product

Product Information

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * "[A] torrent of endlessly inventive prose, by turns comic and enraged, embracing life in all its contradictions. In this spectacular novel, verbal pyrotechnics barely outshine its psychological truths."-- Newsday Winner of the Whitbread Prize One of the most controversial and acclaimed novels ever written, The Satanic Verses is Salman Rushdie's best-known and most galvanizing book. Set in a modern world filled with both mayhem and miracles, the story begins with a bang: the terrorist bombing of a London-bound jet in midflight. Two Indian actors of opposing sensibilities fall to earth, transformed into living symbols of what is angelic and evil. This is just the initial act in a magnificent odyssey that seamlessly merges the actual with the imagined. A book whose importance is eclipsed only by its quality, The Satanic Verses is a key work of our times. Praise for The Satanic Verses "Rushdie is a storyteller of prodigious powers, able to conjure up whole geographies, causalities, climates, creatures, customs, out of thin air." -- The New York Times Book Review "Exhilarating, populous, loquacious, sometimes hilarious, extraordinary . . . a roller-coaster ride over a vast landscape of the imagination." -- The Guardian (London) "A novel of metamorphoses, hauntings, memories, hallucinations, revelations, advertising jingles, and jokes. Rushdie has the power of description, and we succumb." -- The Times (London)

Reviews
"Salman Rushdie is a storyteller of prodigious powers, able to conjure up whole geographies, causalities, climates, creatures, customs, out of thin air." -- The New York Times Book Review "...a surreal hallucinatory feast." -- Kirkus Reviews "...a splendid feast." -- Publishers Weekly "[A] torrent of endlessly inventive prose, by turns comic and enraged, embracing life in all its contradictions. In this spectacular novel, verbal pyrotechnics barely outshine its psychological truths." -- Newsday "Exhilarating, populous, loquacious, sometimes hilarious, extraordinary . . . a roller-coaster ride over a vast landscape of the imagination." --The Guardian --The Times (London) "In pure aesthetic terms, "The Satanic Verses" is a delight: funny, broadly erudite and wrenchingly gorgeous. And as a matter of politics and religion, this novel embodies the unique ideological power of art: to push beyond what's possible, to say what would be too costly for actors in another arena to speak aloud, to expand the audience's sense of what the world can be." -- Alyssa Rosenberg, The Washington Post

    Glad to find it

I bought 2 copies, one was a gift. I haven't read mine but the gifted one has been read and loved. I highly recommend this book.

    Epic Disappointment

For years I have wanted to read this book. Always been too busy or never thought about it. Finally retired and ordered it looking forward to a controversial yet compelling novel. After all it stirred up the whole world it must be rivioting, right? It's all gobbledegook. Leviticus is easier and more enjoyable to read. I thought maybe it was just the first chapter which was some kind of a dream, but no, it keeps going. Not worth the effort to uwind all the obfuscation.

  • Good deal on the book, difficult for me to read and stick with the story.

The book deal was okay. Good copy, good price and quick delivery. The writer puts more descriptive detail in the story, and that takes time to read and then the detail doesn't seem to relate to the story in a very important way. Early in a book detail is important to set the scenes properly, after that, not so much in my opinion. Rushdie is by all accounts an outstanding writer. This book gave me too much to digest, too early on, and it seemed too much. Don't know of a better way to put it.

  • One of the most controversial books of all time

I bought this book to see for myself what all the controversy was all about. The book mostly deals with issues of identity, immigration and language through the adventures of two Hindu Muslims in Britain. Nothing controversial there, people who have lived abroad would find this part quite interesting and relevant. The parts that I believe eventually led to the death fatwa for Rushdie are the chapters that deal with the life of Mohammed, angel Gibreel, the ayetollah. The author gives an alternative version of the official history of Islam, presents Mohammed as a common person with his flaws rather than a prophet, has a few less than kind words for the ayetollah. Overall, I think the book presents a different and fresh perspective on Islam. As a Muslim, I enjoyed the book and wasn't offended ...

  • Book

Book is in great shape. I had wanted to read when first published and then when the author was attacked it reminded me I hadn’t read the book yet!
