Fourth edition (completing 8th thousand) of this classic work, which was first published in 1859 in a print run of just 1,250 and considered to be the foundation of evolutionary biology. Includes the original half-title, folding plate, lacking the ads at the end of the volume. First few leaves with slight fraying and creasing to edges, the title page with a short closed tear to fore-edge (into text to verso but without loss), as well as some occasional light spotting, both mainly to peripheral leaves. Recently professionally sympathetically rebound in modern green cloth, though retaining much of the original spine strip. Slight smoky aroma, but generally in Good condition. [Freeman 385 and p.79], 8vo, 1866. Rare early edition of one of the seminal works on natural history.”
