An "Age of Sail" must see!

Fantastic film, based on a true story, historically accurate, well acted. Exciting seafaring action, a unique film in that real ships were used. Far superior to anything that would be made today with computer graphics. If you are a fan of the Age of Sail, this is your cup of tea! Enjoy!

  • Great Tale

This is a great action/adventure with an emotional overtone. The action is very well portrayed; the charterization is excellent. Both Alec Guiness and Dirk Bogard play convincing roles which are timeless in their scope. I recommend this to teens on up to adults of any age who like a good tale based upon historical facts. It is a movie that one can view over and over again.

  • A Rousing Seafaring Adventure

With the likes of Alec Guinness and Dirk Bogarde at the helm (literally) of this sea saga, how can you go wrong. My favorite sea movie of all time is Master and Commander. But this film gave that film a run for the money and they are now tied for the status of my all-time favorite. This film, made nearly 50 years before that one, had NO CGI, so all the effects you see in it were actually filmed as they happened. In fact, I'd challenge any eagle-eyed viewer to decide which scenes were of an actual ship and which ones were of models. The sea battle at the end will blow you away because of its realism--despite the supposed "lack" of fantastic special effects at the time. Plus the story line is incredible in that it pits Guinness' character against Bogarde's. I won't tell you why or how ...

  • One of the better films depicting life in the RN.

I recall this movie from long ago but never seemed to come across it until I found it here. Though not up to the visual standard of the more recent Master and Commander (i.e. CGI effects) most of what it shows is accurate (though a real seaman's life then was far more squalid back then). Very well acted particularly Mr. Bogarde as scheming 1st Lieut. Scott-Padget. The movie portrays a time leading up to the mutinies at Spithead and Nore.

  • True account of discipline in the early British navy

Well made film that captures the British Navy’s early years of harsh discipline and living conditions aboard its warships.
