About this product

Product Information

FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS is a whirlwind of a movie, a wacky, drug-laden story backed by a fist-pumping rock & roll soundtrack featuring everything from Wayne Newton and Tom Jones to Combustible Edison and Dead Kennedys. Journalist Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp) heads to Las Vegas to cover a motorcycle race, bringing along his Samoan lawyer, Dr. Gonzo (Benicio Del Toro), in this furious adaptation of the book by Hunter S. Thompson. It is 1971, and Duke and Gonzo are on their way to Sin City with a frightened hitchhiker (a nearly unrecognizable Tobey Maguire) and a trunkful of drugs, which they ingest nonstop. Depp is terrific as Duke, Thompson's alter ego, and Del Toro is a riot as the crazy lawyer. To perfect his Thompsonian performance, Depp spent a lot of time with the good doctor, and it paid off in a film that captures the frenetic pace of the counterculture novel. Director Terry Gilliam, a master of complex, bizarre visual imagery, has a field day interpreting the drug-hazed world in which Duke and Gonzo reside. An all-star cast chimes in with wonderfully offbeat bit parts, including Harry Dean Stanton, Gilliam regular Katherine Helmond, Flea, Cameron Diaz, Ellen Barkin, Christina Ricci, Gary Busey, Lyle Lovett, and others.

    Horrible

I bought this dvd to add to my collection. Great movie but wish I purchased it elsewhere. Cuts and rips on the dvd case itself. The disc has too many surface straches to be considered in 'good' condition. Was very disappointed. Take your money to another vendor!

  • sick!

I think the people who reviewed this film are a bit warped for thinking of it as anything less than a masterpiece. This film comes from the glorious days of Johnny Depp taking obscure roles in films and totally immersing himself in the character. Benecio Del Toro's performance was second to none, and I cannot for the life of me comprehend why someone would think this to be the "worst movie ever". God save us that we actually have to think a little when we sit in those awful theatre seats. Heaven forbid we're required to use our imagination a little bit and not have it handed to us in the form of Hollywood mindless pap. The film, del toro, Depp, and of course, Gilliam are all brilliant. I pity the fools who gave this movie a negative review and fail miserably in articulating their ...

  • A Business "Trip" ?!?!

The first thing I said to my husband after we'd watched this movie together was "I just remembered why I don't use drugs!" This movie provides some insight into the misery and destruction that goes along with drug abuse, although it is far from being a realistic picture. In this movie, journalist Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp) and his attorney (Benicio Del Toro) drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas on a business-trip turned drug trip. I had a really hard time assigning a numeric rating to this movie. As far as personal enjoyment goes, I'd give it somewhere between 1-2 stars. I am a huge Johnny Depp fan & I usually enjoy watching anything he does...but it's hard to watch anyone self-destruct, even when you realize that it is excellent acting on film. The acting in this movie IS excellent and ...

  • Bizarre-o...

It's an odd one! This movie is perfect for anyone who's had to "clean up their act." While the visual aspects of the movie are a little out-of-this-world, they are hilarious. Johnny Depp is amazing in this movie. While the role is not a real stretch for anyone's acting skills, his portrayal of Hunter S. Thomson, aka "Raoul Duke" is dead-on. Benicio del Toro's character is so ridiculously funny, too. It's great for nostalgia.
