It had three categories: outward, upward, and inward prayer, and each section had seven chapters (each going over a different kind of prayer) for it.
This was a very good book. It is very similar in arrangement to one of Foster's other books, Celebration of Discipline, with twenty-one chapters divided into three section. Each section focuses on a different "direction" of prayer (inward, outward, upward), and each chapter explains a different kind of prayer. It is the kind of book that has so much information, I feel as though I probably only understood and was able to apply 10% of the information, if that. It opened my eyes to kinds of prayer that I had never really thought about, much less used. It seems to me that Foster does a great job of explaining just about every kind of prayer without bias toward one denominational belief or way of doing things. It is something I hope to go back to many times when in need of guidance for my ... This was a very good book. Foster book purchase
I purchased this book by Foster for my research on Eastern Mysticism and it's continuing impact on real Christians. The author lacks wisdom and discernment on EM dangers. But of course it's because he practices Contemplative Prayer along with several other practices that are not biblical and fly in the face of what scripture clearly teaches. When I get the opportunity to teach about these dangers it is always helpful to have the author's books available to reveal what they actually say about them. Sad commentary on Christians who search for spiritual depth and end up seeking help from spirit guides etc.I purchased this book by Foster for my research on Eastern Mysticism and it's continuing impact on real Christians. I want to know God and enjoy the closest relationship possible--and this book is one that leads me to work on that. I do not understand Prayer but God says to do it and Foster tries to explain it and I find great peace in doing it. Foster points out that God wants us to talk to Him--awesome!...and He wants to talk to us--amazing! The good is easy to read, but draws you to want to experience God, and gives you insights in HOW-TO. I am not much into theology but this is good teaching that leads to doing.
