About this product

Product Information

Here at last in paperback is Frank McCourt's critically acclaimed and bestselling book about how his thirty-year teaching career shaped his second act as a writer. "Teacher Man" is also an urgent tribute to teachers everywhere. In bold and spirited prose featuring his irreverent wit and heartbreaking honesty, McCourt records the trials, triumphs and surprises of teaching in public high schools. "Teacher Man" shows McCourt developing his unparalleled ability to tell a great story as, five days a week, five periods per day, he works to gain the attention and respect of unruly, hormonally charged or indifferent adolescents. For McCourt, storytelling itself is the source of salvation, and in "Teacher Man" the journey to redemption--and literary fame--is an exhilarating adventure.

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!

  • You become part of the poverty, feeling their anguish.

After reading "Angela's Ashes" I had to read more McCourt. He keeps me up at night turning the pages. These 2 novels are what everyone should read, young or old we should never be unaware of the struggles of others. I felt I was there to feel the hunger pains, see the homes, and the messy children. His writing is so descriptive you can feel the cold, hear the others breathing at night, feel his embarassment for living in poverty. You feel as if something should have been done; your almost angry that is wasn't. This novel makes you want to protect the children of the depression, give them warm beds, a full stomache, and a chance at an education. His writing makes you think about what could happen. True story of humanity and struggle. One of the best author's of our time!! Thank you McCourt ...

  • Stories Within The Story

At last, I thank my lucky stars for a touching memoir. McCourt’s “Angela’s Ashes” was well received, and rightly so, an endearing but gritty look at the life of twentieth century Irish immigrants to the U.S. “‘Tis” didn’t go over as well, but Teacher Man proves the first wasn’t a fluke. In this one, McCourt chronicles his career teaching in the New York City school system. This isn’t a teacher-wows-student-and-students-change-their-wild-ways book. Nor is it a teacher against the system story. McCourt disarms us with those possibilities, of course. But just when you think he’s going to resort to cliché, he slips us a head fake and scores an easy basket. Teaching never seems easy for McCourt. He worries whether he’s reaching the kids, frets over their taking advantage of his insecurity as a ...

  • The title is exactly what the book is about: memories .

Frank McCourt is an incredible writer and I have read his other two books which are part of his Memoir. His descriptions are vivid and he is able to portray his life in a humorous way even when there are hardships.
