About this product

Product Information

The raucous, exuberant, often wildly funny account of a journey through America and Mexico, Jack Kerouac's On the Road instantly defined a generation on its publication in 1957: it was, in the words of a New York Times reviewer, "the clearest and most important utterance yet made by the generation Kerouac himself named years ago as 'beat.'" Written in the mode of ecstatic improvisation that Allen Ginsberg described as "spontaneous bop prosody," Kerouac's novel remains electrifying in its thirst for experience and its defiant rebuke of American conformity. In his portrayal of the fervent relationship between the writer Sal Paradise and his outrageous, exasperating, and inimitable friend Dean Moriarty, Kerouac created one of the great friendships in American literature; and his rendering of the cities and highways and wildernesses that his characters restlessly explore is a hallucinatory travelogue of a nation he both mourns and celebrates. Now, The Library of America collects On the Road together with four other autobiographical "road books" published during a remarkable four-year period. The Dharma Bums (1958), at once an exploration of Buddhist spirituality and an account of the Bay Area poetry scene, is notable for its thinly veiled portraits of Kerouac's acquaintances, including Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, and Kenneth Rexroth. The Subterraneans (1958) recounts a love affair set amid the bars and bohemian haunts of San Francisco. Tristessa (1960) is a melancholy novella describing a relationship with a prostitute in Mexico City. Lonesome Traveler (1960) collects travel essays that evoke journeys in Mexico and Europe, and concludes with an elegiac lament for the lost world of the American hobo. Also included in Road Novels are selections from Kerouac's journal, which provide a fascinating perspective on his early impressions of material eventually incorporated into On the Road . LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation's literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America's best and most significant writing. The Library of America series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, and ribbon markers, and are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries.

"Hard to believe, but this year marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of the celebrated Mr. K's Beat bible, On the Road , a book that came out of nowhere and knocked everyone on their butts. Kerouac joins The Library of America with this ensemble of four novels (Road, The Dharma Bums, The Subterraneans, and Tristessa ) plus Lonesome Traveler , a collection of travel essays, and selections from his journals of thumbing and bumming his way across Europe and Mexico. Road's anniversary will lure new readers as well as old ones looking for another fix, and this collection is a wonderful bargain. Happy anniversary, Jack." --Library Journal, July 15, 2007, "Hard to believe, but this year marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of the celebrated Mr. K's Beat bible, On the Road , a book that came out of nowhere and knocked everyone on their butts. The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!

  • Kerouac's better works...

If you want a nice pithy collection of Kerouac's better known work look no farther than this Library of America edition. This edition contains Dharma Bums, Subterraneans, and of course On the Road. A few other minor works are included - Tristessa, Lonesome Traveler, and some of the authors own journal selections. As always the Library of America editions are meant to last and are printed on good quality acid free paper. One of the features of their editions is a time line which covers the authors life. Always a nice to have especially if you want to know more about the author. As for Kerouac? He is a subject of much debate. Some may consider his work less than literature. Stylistically he takes some getting used to. And he can definitely lose you in the prose he spits out like a machine ...

  • Great Experiance, that is my verdict.

Great book, I've always wanted to read this book but never really seem to get my hands on it. The book is brand new and I'm happy with it. The shipment was very prompt and I didn't have to wait forever for it to arrive. It's one of the American clasics and it makes for a great addition onto my book shelf. I like the fact that there are other writings from Kerouac in it besides the Road novel. This way you can read his other writing as well. Its great investment and it is very handsomly assembled in a tight hardcover. Thank you!
