Great for recovering old 8mm and Hi8 video tapes

I bought it for just one purpose: I have some old 8mm and Hi8 video tapes (back from the analog era) that I want to transfer to computer files, e.g. avi or mp4 files, but my old Hi8 camcorder died a long time ago. I found that trying to buy an old Hi8 camcorder to do this was a little bit of trouble because all the 8mm/Hi8 camcorders are at this point very old and it's hard to find a good working one. For about the same price as a good working Hi8 camcorder, however, you may be able to find a Digital8 camcorder that can also play the old 8mm and Hi8 video tapes, so that's what I did. The bonus is that the Digital8 camcorder also has a digital out signal that you can connect to your PC to capture the video. If you get an old Hi8 camcorder it's likely to only have analog video out, so ...

  • Delicate Firewire Port

I can't comment on the recording quality yet because I haven't shot any video yet. I bought this old Digital 8 camcorder to digitize my dad's old 8mm tapes via firewire. I've had two issues that are apparently not uncommon with these Sony Camcorders. After plugging and unplugging the firewire cable maybe a dozen times one of the tiny little pins in the 4 pin firewire port on the camcorder got bent and wasn't making contact when in I would plug in the cable. With a magnifying glass, a flashlight, and a thin sewing needle I was able to bend it back enough to make it work again. The other issue was sometimes during playback the picture would start getting messed up. I don't know the technical term for it. It would start looking 'ghosty' with vertical blurring or 'ghostiness' . I found ...

  • This camera is worth reliving again!

I bought one of these new in 2003 and use it for my Architectural Profession. Having a viewfinder is invaluable for me since shooting outdoors with a screen is so inefficient, however, having a viewfinder that both extends and focuses to your vision is the best and this camera has it. The only shortcoming is no earphone jack to really get the playback info loud and clear. I suspect that I may be able to rig one from one of the lead-out cables in front but never invested the time to experiment. I just bought another one only because my tape carrier mechanism is just about inoperable. Get a nice wide angle screw on lens, make sure you get a remote control , all the patch and power cords, and at least two batteries---one being the genuine Sony brand fat NP-QM71D, and, a good combo house ...

  • Very Nice 8mm Sony Handycam DCR-TRV460

It had been a long time since I owned an 8mm camcorder and I can remember the one I owned by Sony was larger than the DCR-TRV460. This is such a nice size and fits quite well in your hand. I bought mine here on eBay from e-zdigital and it was in excellent condition. I'm so glad I waited to find the perfect Sony Camcorder and an eBayer that had the knowledge to answer my questions. I found one that came with a nice case, NP-QM71D Battery, all the paperwork, all the cables (A/V, USB, and i.Link) Handycam Software CD, charger, shoulder strap, remote, lens cover and even a extra tape. This was so much nicer buying every thing all at once and this way I was ready to start taping when I received it. It's easy to transfer video's to your computer or VCR and easy to hook up to your TV. It ...

  • AV DV built in!!!

I bought this camcorder because it's the only one I've ever found that has a built in Analog to Digital converter. I was so disappointed when Sony discontinued that feature. Now you have to buy a separate unit if you want to go analog (VHS) to digital (pc). I've got 2 of these cameras specifically for that purpose. And for converting 8mm.
