About this product

Product Information

A 40-something Humphrey Bogart and a novice named Lauren Bacall might have seemed like an odd pairing on paper, but their chemistry in TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT ignites the screen. Howard Hawks directs this classic about a jaded American fisherman (Bogart) who risks his life to help a group of French freedom fighters and a sultry young woman (Bacall) with whom he falls in love. The fascinating setting (Vichy-controlled Martinique during the Second World War), the source material (Ernest Hemingway's 1937 novel), and a screenplay co-written by a literary master (William Faulkner) all take a backseat to the on- and off-screen romance between the two legends. TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT is perhaps most memorable for the 19-year-old Bacall seducing Bogart (and audiences) with her lesson on whistling.

Awesome seller, great communication, honest, will work with you; also it’s was packed perfectly and arrived safely. I have been searching for this product, it’s rare and the company stopped making it. I was shocked this was available and the seller even reduced the price. Thank you so much. The one on the tree now must stay with the tree to protect it as we are leaving this dwelling and now I can bring one to my new home. Much appreciated for everything. BUY WITH CONFIDENCE!!! The item was accurately described, and the detailed photographs left no room for uncertainty. Despite the seller's excellent and careful packaging of the fragile item, it unfortunately experienced breakage due to mishandling by the shipping company. Upon informing the seller with images of the damage, he graciously offered a partial refund, even though the issue wasn't his fault. I wholeheartedly recommend making purchases from this honest and reputable seller.

    When Bogart met Bacall

Based on a horrible novel by Hemingway, but movie is nothing like the novel. First acting job for 19 year old Bacall, whom married 44 year old Bogart fell in love with during filming. Bacall plays a tramp and a thief, an amazing role for an innocent girl to have to play. There are a lot of memorable lines to enjoy here. Watching it is a lot of fun.

  • A "must-have" classic Bogey film.

This film, based on the book by Ernest Hemingway, directed by Howard Hawks, written by William Faulkner and Jules Furthman and Starring Bogey and Bacall is the textbook definition of Classic Film. Even small parts like that of Hoagey Carmichael providing musical interludes and Walter Brennan's comic relief are perfectly staged and performed. Add all this to the intrigue of WW II in Martinique and the real-life story of middle aged Humphrey Bogart falling for his femme fatale 19 year old co-star, Lauren Bacall and well, it all ads up to cinematic alchemy. The DVD, released in 2003, also provides a featurette on the making of the film and the love affair between Bogey & Bacall as well as period cartoons and a unique radio version of the film. All in all, this package is an enduring ...

  • To Have and Have Not

Excellent movie, especially to watch the Bogard/Bacall (she's only 19) chemistry happening as the film evolves. The extra features showing the fact that Howard Hawks told Hemingway that Hawks could make a successful movie out of Hemingway's worst book..."To Have & Have Not". Hawks brought in Wm. Faulkner to spice up the text. Luckily, we don't get the other 2 stories that are the book version, but instead get the Hollywood "sexy" ending that is very satisfying. Great Warners cartoon based on the movie's scenes.

  • A Classic for good reason

The fact that this DVD was made in 2003 of a 1946 movie is indication. A mere 3 weeks into filming, Bogie and Bacall fell in love. Seeing Walter Brennan is also a treat. Great music.
