Late Period Dead
Some of the tightest playing and best renditions of Dead classic as well as modern tunes to be found. Disc 2 is worth the price of admission alone and is my favorite over Disc 1. The rhythm section is unfortunately underrepresented sonically which is odd considering that Phil Lesh produced Without a Net. I have never been a huge fan of Brent Mydland on keyboards; his sound was too much a tinkling cascade of electric piano high notes most of the time. However, his vocals on this recording truly shine.Some of the tightest playing and best renditions of Dead classic as well as modern tunes to be found. I love the overall sound quality which is lacking in some of the older live recordings, possibly indicative of higher quality of recording equipment available during this part of the Dead's Career, which is noticeably lacking on some of the older live recordings. My personal favorite version of 'One more Saturday Night,' as Jerry's lead just seems to be the way it always should have been, and a very nice, much needed, high quality, newer recording of 'Help - Slip - Frank', and a good cover of 'Dear Mr. Fantasy', which they didn't play that much. Excellent versions of 'Eyes of the World,' featuring a guest appearance by Wynton Marsalis, and a version of 'Bird Song,' which I like even more than the Acoustic version of 'Reckoning,' which is far superior to any of the Dick's picks versions ...
