”The Nightfly” in surround is a beautiful experience
Finally I got to experience a studio recording in 5.1 dvd-audio advanced resolution. Historically I never cared for surround systems but have always been curious about the sound quality of dvd-audio and being able to hear isolated parts of studio recordings. When I upgraded bluray player and got a surround system I made sure it would be compatible with dvd audio, and I’m really happy I did. Most surrround live concerts just put alot of audience in the rear speakers but this studio recording put horn sections and wonderful things in the surround channels. Just wonderful, it’s like exploring the music all over with a live-feel to it. And is the most enjoyable experience about having a surround system. Fagen carries on the Steely Dan legacy flawlessly
In retrospect, this is by far the best of Fagen's solo efforts; a true masterpiece from start to finish. Fagen lays down a smooth, heavily jazz laced CD with the focus being on the piano and vocals. My favorite track by far is the title track, but I.G.Y., New Frontier, and Walk Between the Raindrops (a throwback to the 50's big band sound) all have that special something that can only be described as Steely Dan. The entire CD leaves nothing to be wanted; except MORE of the same. It is a crime that Fagen's solo work has not gotten the critical acclaim as his other little project (you know, a little band called Steely Dan) because this album is stellar. Best version of Nightfly on the market presently
The only other review I saw posted was critical of the surround aspect and separation of the instruments in the 5.1 mix. I agree that this is no Steven Wilson mix, but there is an element of rear speaker break out, particularly of the horn sections. The front and rear channel stereo mix is evident as well. The original mix was dense and so is this 5.1 mix. The fidelity that the DVDA provides is a real treat. This is the best version of this album you'll find on market presently.
