All his life, Greg McPartlin wanted to be a Marine corpsman, a medic skilled at saving lives. Three months of "bagging-and-tagging" bodies during Vietnam's Tet Offensive took the luster off being a Marine-but not off McPartlin's desire to serve his country. After assisting in the sea-recovery of Apollo 11-the first ship to bring men to the moon-the twenty-year-old McPartlin was redeployed to Vietnam as an elite Navy SEAL. Barred as a medic by the Geneva Convention from the make-or-break training considered vital to service as a Navy SEAL, McPartlin had to show he had what it took. In a war where soldiers partied with their buddies in Saigon one day and crawled through an enemy-infested jungle hell the next, McPartlin proved that he was not only an outstanding medic but a real Navy SEAL-the toughest of the tough.     War Is Messy

    An historian who has spent considerable time investigating naval special warfare in World War Two, I have wanted to get a decent handle on the Vietnam experience. This book rates high in that effort. History is messy. War is messy. No one know that better than a veteran, and McPartlin details his own descent into the shared misery with a humor and humility that sheds valuable light on his humanity. No boasting here, just straight talk, and an obvious desire to keep it honest. He covers every aspect of operations, including helo. I especially appreciate his spotlight on pilots, as I have a good friend who flew medevac.

    What an INCREDIBLE BOOK!!!

    As a medic from Desert Storm, I am interested in medic's participation it all war's, but McPartlin tells his true accounts of working with Navy Seals like no other book I have ever read from a Seal vantiage point or a medic's view. This is as action packed as it is humorous and the author tells his story with the detail like he had written it down day by day as he was there! This is a must read for anyone interested in Seal's in Vietnam or for Combat Medic's worldwide.

    Fascintating Non-fiction from a new perspective

    An amazing acount od a navy seal corpsman in vietnam! I have reead many of the seal accounts of the war in vietnam, and this is easily the most compelling! McPartlin gives a unique insite as a soldier and healer! One of the best books I have read, EVER!
