About this product

Product Information

There aren't too many teachers who are written about in the New Yorker, People, Entertainment Weekly, Elle, and excerpted in Reader's Digest. But Esme Raji Codell is no ordinary teacher. An irrepressible spirit, she wears costumes in the classroom, dances with the kids during math lessons, rollerskates down the hallways, and puts on rousing performances with at-risk students in the library. In Educating Esme, the uncensored diary of her first year teaching in a Chicago public school, she opens a window into the closed world of a real-life classroom. Refusing to let anything get in the way of delivering the education her fifth-graders deserve, this dedicated teacher finds herself battling bureaucrats, gang members, inflexible administrators, angry children, and her own insecurities, while at the same time changing her students' lives forever. Now in paperback, here is the book People called "hilarious," Booklist called "screamingly funny," Greensboro News and Record called "brilliantly conceived," and the Boston Phoenix noted "should be read by anyone who's interested in the future of public education."

  • An Amazing, Realistic, Shocking Read

Educating Esme was perhaps one of the most useful books for me to read/buy for an education course. It follows the story of Esme, a first year teacher in a Chicago school. Against amazing, astounding incidents such as bullet holes in the classroom (of a brand new building), making her students feel interested in learning although it seems apparent that many will end up on the streets in gangs, and overcoming amazing but realistic odds such as an apathetic, yuppie principal and violent, misunderstanding parents that quite honestly should never *be* parents. Told in a diary-entry style, Esme will astound and startle you with her frankness and no-BS attitude. I would recommend this book to all, educators, parents, and students alike. Of all the textbooks I have had to buy, this one was the ...

  • Educators will Love Esme!

Educating Esme was a great book for a beginning teacher like myself. I'm also sure that seasoned teachers can appreciate Esme's first year struggles. This book is hard to put down due to Esme's honest and sometimes blunt account of her daily struggles, battles and triumphs. I've already passed this book on to two other teacher friends so I'd most definitely recommend it to you!

  • This is a good book for teachers

This is a good book for first year teachers and any one in the process of becoming a teacher. It has a lot of insight on what to expect in the days to come

  • Funny, Truthful, and Inspiring!

No details are left out of this as you learn about the good, the bad, and the wonderful aspects of teaching. I highly recommend it especially for anyone thinking about teaching.
