About this product

Product Information

For millennia, the human body has been celebrated as nature's finest masterpiece. This superb drawing guide helps you unravel its complexity and capture its aesthetic on paper. Packed with instructive illustrations and specially-commissioned photographs of male and female models, Anatomy for the Artist unveils the extraordinary construction of the human body and celebrates its continuing prominence in Western Art today. Through her detailed sketches, acclaimed artist Sarah Simblet shows you how to look inside the human frame to map its muscle groups, skeletal strength, balance, poise, and grace. Selected drawings superimposed over photographs reveal fascinating relationships between external appearance and internal structure. Six drawing classes guide you through human anatomy afresh, offering techniques for observing and drawing the skeleton, including the head, ribcage, pelvis, hands, and feet. By investigating a series of masterworks juxtaposed against photographs of real-life models, Dr. Simblet also traces the visions of different artists across time, from Holbein's Christ Entombed to Edward Hopper's Hotel Room. For any artist, learning about the human body is always a palpable delight. This imaginative reference guide will enhance your anatomical drawing and painting techniques at every level.

  • Could use less stars and sparkles.

It seems a lot about this book is the presentation of the material- I was sad to see that. It looks really beautiful, but there's little functionality to that aspect. The drawings are made in ink, very detailed- reminds me of some european comic artists. The book has some transparencies that overlay the skin area, bone over skin- it's quite beautiful. This is a book worth having in your anatomy collection, for an artist. But it's by no means an end all be all anatomy reference book. I'm sad to say that, because the author obviously has what it takes to present an end all be all anatomy reference book.

  • Anatomy for the Artist

Let me first say that there isn't one little thing that I DON'T like about this book. When I first saw it in the store, I knew I had to have it, and then I went on eBay to find it cheaper! Anyone who wants to sharpen their skills in drawing people should have this book. It breaks down the body parts in such a way that not only do you end up with a better understanding for anatomy, but a better understanding of how to approach drawing it. It's written well, and there are many photographs. Those photographs serve two purposes; one is to demonstrate what the author is trying to say, and the other is to provide a useful reference when drawing from a live model is not possible. I give this book a ten thousand out of ten, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the subject.

  • One of the best anatomy books for artists

This book has excellent, well lit photos of the models. There are several photos of a variety of poses of primo models. There are photos which have an overlay showing the bones so you can see exactly where they are located within the body. A few photos show models in the same pose as seen in famous paintings for your study. There are several photos of a real skeleton in addition to the sketches of bones and the skull. I appreciate the number of excellent hand and foot photos which isn't seen in artist model reference books very often if at all. No matter how good one is at drawing and painting hands and feet, the art of drawing them can't be perfected enough. I borrowed this book from my local library several times and decided it was one that needed to be in my library of artist ...

  • Great book!

I just looooooooveeee this book!! The models in this book are nude ,but as an artist what better way to learn anatomy than from nude models! Best money i ever spent!! This book's got me hooked!

  • Sarah Simblet Always Delivers

Sarah Simblet is an accomplished artist and teacher. All of her books are both visually sumptuous and well written. Before purchasing this book, I bought her Botany for Artists and Sketchbook for The Artist and I recommend them all.
