About this product

Product Information

Based on a novel by spy writer John Le Carre, TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY remains one of the most acclaimed British mini-series of all time. Alec Guinness turns in a superlative performance as George Smiley, a former spy who was forcibly retired after an internal scandal in the British Secret Intelligence Service. When it's discovered that a Russian spy has infiltrated the organization's highest levels, Smiley is brought back into service to covertly spy on his former colleagues and root out the double agent. This gripping tale of Cold War espionage was followed by the sequel SMILEY'S PEOPLE.

Very happy with my experience! It arrived quickly, was accurate to the image, & was in good condition. Even though yours was more expensive, I choose yours because you included actual photos of the item & you had a great seller rating - you definitely deserve it! I was so impressed by the care you put into packaging the disk with the cardboard not just on the outside, but also the inside of the case to protect it from dislodging and scratching itself up. Real attention to detail - thank you!

    Top Spy Movie

Best spy story of all time. This original version is considerably longer than the newer moie with Gary Oldman who was good as Smiley but Alec Guiness was superb as well as the supporting cast.

  • A must -have collection item for spy novel readers

John Le Care at his best. Tinker Tailor, Soldier,Spy describes the international intrigue and power struggle between the British Intelligence Service and the Soviet KGB in a very realistic manner. This British Mini series opens a rare window for those truly interested in the world of espionage during the 60's . An era when the value of the "human asset" the lone agent was still perceived as the best and most source of intelligence. Before the computerized intelligence and the spy satellite age.It was the time when intelligence was mostly contained in mountains of endless paper files. The video series, converted quite successfully to a DVD version follows the book in a very smooth and precise way, which is a work of true mastership, since Le Care's writing style is rather complex. The DVD ...

  • The author understands Russian history & psychology-pity most Americans don’t

Just brilliant on its own so I had to also order the Smileys People CD set. My $.02: If you really want to “get” the post WWII espionage & political environment, I suggest you read the novels first.

  • Alec Guiness is always great.

CC, but not subtitled. My Home Theater set up won't let me access CC. I end up watching CC material on my computer. I know this story well and enjoyed the cast throughout. Discs played fine. No skipping or dropouts.

  • The dark world of Cold War British counterintelligence

For all the John Le Carré's lovers out there. The dark universe of British counterintelligence minutely played out by Alec Guiness accompanied by a brilliant cast. The absence of subtitles and the use of specialized vocabulary may hinder some viewers. However a glossary of terms and characters is provided with the DVDs. This is a low-budget series by contemporary standards, but the excellent acting carries us on effortlessly. I found it hard to stop in the middle of the series! Also look for the sequel series 'Smiley's People'.
