About this product

Product Information

"All is for the best in the best of all possible worlds" It was the indifferent shrug and callous inertia that this "optimism" concealed which so angered Voltaire, who found the "all for the best" approach a patently inadequate response to suffering, to natural disasters, not to mention the questions of illness and man-made war. Moreover, as the rebel whose satiric genius had earned him not only international acclaim, but two stays in the Bastille, flogging, and exile, Voltaire knew personally what suffering entailed. In Candide he whisks his young hero and friends through a ludicrous variety of tortures, tragedies, and a reversal of fortune, in the company of Pangloss, a "metaphysico-theologo-comolo-nigologist" of unflinching optimism. The result is one of the glories of eighteenth-century satire. For more than sixty-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,500 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Reviews
Winner of the 2012 Fifty Books/Fifty Covers show, organized by Design Observer in association with AIGA and Designers & Books Winner of the 2014 Type Directors Club Communication Design Award Praise for Penguin Drop Caps: "[Penguin Drop Caps] convey a sense of nostalgia for the tactility and aesthetic power of a physical book and for a centuries-old tradition of beautiful lettering." -- Fast Company "Vibrant, minimalist new typographic covers.... Bonus points for the heartening gender balance of the initial selections." --Maria Popova, Brain Pickings "The Penguin Drop Caps series is a great example of the power of design. Why buy these particular classics when there are less expensive, even free editions of Great Expectations ? Because they're beautiful objects. Paul Buckley and Jessica Hische's fresh approach to the literary classics reduces the design down to typography and color. Each cover is foil-stamped with a cleverly illustrated letterform that reveals an element of the story. Jane Austen's A ( Pride and Prejudice ) is formed by opulent peacock feathers and Charlotte Bronte's B ( Jane Eyre ) is surrounded by flames. The complete set forms a rainbow spectrum prettier than anything else on your bookshelf." --Rex Bonomelli, The New York Times "Drool-inducing." -- Flavorwire "Classic reads in stunning covers--your book club will be dying." -- Redbook

  • Read Voltaire and Prepare the Guillotine!

Voltaire sets up his paper tiger then, with characteristic cynicism, proceeds with his pornographic mockery. He dishes up sarcasm and criticism for every institution he considers, but naturally provides no positive alternatives. If you somehow like the failed rantings of an over-esteemed, conceited 18th century "philosopher" then you'll line up with everyone else to robotically sing his praises. I, like others, had to read his tripe for college, but I refused to laud the man. He is a bigmouthed loser who gets away with it just because he's brilliant. Voltaire's message is empty; he gave us nothing, excepting the guillotine. If the book had been written in 2010 no one would even publish it. Voltaire is intellectual cancer.

  • Who knew a book so old is so funny

Maybe only the intellectual types will laugh at this, or the ones who know a little bit about philosophy, but I thought this book was very funny. It is one of only a few (hitchiker's guide is another) that made me laugh out loud. If you can, try and get the illustrated version. Voltaire is one of the original satirists who wrote in the vernacular, so you might just get this book because of its historical merit. But don't be expecting Erasmus or something when you read it. It's not intense thinking, it's actually a fairly entertaining and rather silly hero-romance type story that keeps making fun of the idea of optimism (it makes me wonder if Voltaire was a pessimist). Get it if you know a little about philosophy.

  • Classic brilliant book by Voltaire

Brilliant book by irreverent profoundly insightful Voltaire on the human condition and the power of the rich ,the powerful, the church the govt to exploit and dominate the balance of society. Candide’s initial native outlook of optimism is replaced by realism based on experience Great condition
