Sweet Silver Blues
Sweet Silver Blues is the first book in a series about Garrett, a P.I. in a fantasy world written by Glen Cook witten in 1987. The series is a mix of Raymond Chandler's Phillip Marlowe (or any other tough P.I. you can think of, Sam Spade, Mike Hammer etc.) and just about any magical realm type novel out there. It has good charactors and is fairly well written. Be prepaired for some typos and missing words (as I've found far too common in the older books). It is not up to par with Cook's later books like The Black Company series but it is still very entertaining. If you like P.I. mysteries and get into stories involving elves, trolls, magic and other fantasy icons you will enjoy these books. These book are not very long but Cook does well at keeping you interested through the entire ... Silver Blues' Sweetly Sings
This book is not for everyone. You will need an imagination and a sense of humor. A sense of adventure would help, too. Simply put, this book (as well as most of the series) is for readers who would just like a fun book to read. Cook's sarky, detective Garrett is the common man's Sherlock Holmes. Where the brilliance of Holmes lies in the cerebral procedural of the mystery, Garrett's adventures are more much more go than show. Set in a fantasy land which includes all manner of fantasy creatures and beings, mixing and matching from tales of every kind, Cook's world somehow avoids being cliche'. It's hard to imagine using prototypical characters from the literary history of science fiction, fantasy, and horror to create deep, unique, and original characters and settings, yet Blues ... The Garrett stories, this one in particular, just seem to effortlessly bound along, never rushing, never dragging. The first-person narrative and short chapters give the book the feeling of a field guide on caffeine. Sweet Silver Blues begins with the core mystery, a missing girl and a dead man, connected by LOTS of cash. From there, Garrett wanders through extraordinary events which Cook paints as relatively mundane. What is the most unique about this series is the fact that they are really just noir mysteries in a unique setting (Garrett is clearly modeled after Bogart' Sam Spade). Mystery fans might just enjoy this book more than die-hard fantasy fans. But here's the best part. Most mysteries, even the best, have a hard time getting going. They are very climax-dependent, and most of the typical mystery is exposition. The Garrett Files use the fantasy setting to keep every chapter satisfying, yet progressing to a resolution. There are no mind blowing revelations in terms of climax, but the mystery is solved. You enjoy getting there and hate to leave when you are done. Fortunately, there are LOTS of sequels. The first three being the best. but all of them familiar and make pleasant reads. Please enjoy!
