"That Man From Rio" excellent on Blu-Ray for American audiences.
This was always one of my favorite French films. I first saw it in a small theater in the 1970s. It had never been produced on a Region-1 DVD for viewing in North America, so I was delighted to suddenly see the Blu-Ray release. A VHS cassette had been released by MGM/UA Home Video during the 1990s, but the picture and color quality was poor and the format was cropped for then standard 4:3 television screens. Viewing this Blu-Ray to fill 16:9 modern TV screens is effectively very close to the original 1.66:1 format so you can comfortably enjoy viewing as it fills your largest new TV. ___ This is a remarkably good transfer to 1080p (2k) resolution. Colors are excellent and details are all crisp and clear, especially considering the original film is now over 50 years old. You can see the ... This was always one of my favorite French films. You can see the clarity right from the opening credits where even the colors of the simulated hand-painted horizontal bands are perfect, just as originally presented. Compared to a modern film transferred to Blu-Ray, you may notice some minimal grain but that is definitely preferred to overcompensated digital manipulation of the source material. Really, this is better than I could have hoped for. ___ Don't expect this to have striking modern surround sound audio; it is presented in the original uncompressed mono track which is perfectly adequate and natural sounding although it may lack the jarring bass which we've now become accustomed to. It is presented only in the original French language, naturally with a smattering of Portuguese from peripheral characters in the Brazilian locales. But, the English subtitles are generally very good, in some cases slightly modernized to suit our current viewing context, but they are hardly necessary for most of the action much of which involves an entertaining long and resuming chase by foot, cars, boats, and planes. ___ If you're viewing this for the first time, you may find elements of the Intercontinental adventure, exotic locales and the hero trying to rescue his girlfriend from the Bad Guys in their quest for an ancient treasure quite familiar. This is no coincidence; George Lucas and Steven Spielberg acknowledged this film as a primary inspirational source for "Raiders of the Lost Ark." ___ "That man from Rio" had actually surprised the French production company with it's International acclaim and mass popularity. It was even nominated for an Academy Award for the original screenwriting. It is one of director Philippe de Broca's best and most enjoyable films. Above all it is a delightful energetic comedy-adventure featuring two great French film stars. ___ A 30 year old Jean-Paul Belmondo is in fine form as the athletic, tirelessly energetic hero. And, he was happy to do most of his own sometimes highly risky stunts. That is not something which you will likely see allowed and even encouraged by a production company these days - and remember, this was decades before green screens and digital special effects even existed. Francoise Dorleac, the older (and in my opinion even prettier) sister of actress Catherine Deneuve, was never more lovely in the years prior to her tragic death in an auto accident at age 25, only three years (and an impressive 10 films) following release of this film. Throughout the film she is alternately delightfully unaware of and naively unaffected by the very real danger at the hands of her captors from whose grasp she frequently slips. ___ Brazilian locations are naturally a delight for the eye. And I found it fascinating to see the new Brazilian capital of Brasilia, carved out of the jungle hundreds of miles from Rio, emerging from a carefully planned modern showcase on paper. With construction just begun in 1960, here it is still seen mainly as a leveled landscape of raw soil with few roads or buildings in any state of completion. ___ The Blu-Ray special features are all in French with English subtitles. They are all worth watching (or reading) to learn about the history of the making of this film by a team of long established professionals collectively creating this gem from scratch. Even the original release trailer featuring Belmondo amusingly describing his participation peppered with cuts from the film is a delight. ___ The second feature "Up to his Ears" may pale compared to the first, but it too is a fun romp and worth watching. Again it stars Belmondo, this time with Ursula Andress. De Broca teams with same Producers, Director of Photography and score by Georges Delerue for this film, now set in the Orient. Discovering he is financially ruined, chronically bored millionaire Belmondo takes out a multi-million dollar short term insurance policy on himself and with the help of his long time Chinese friend plans to have himself murdered by an unknown assassin... but then changes his mind. Can he escape the inevitable within his 30 day time limit? Enjoy more exotic locations in India and Nepal while he flees.
