Fantastic CPU for older machines! (XP SP3 compatible)

Have a Windows XP Home Edition computer that is used for vintage gaming and for running various other software of the era. Was running a single core at 1.8Ghz and it wasn't cutting it for some applications. Bought this and installed it. Yes, XP Home Edition does support dual cores, just make sure you have the most recent SP3 patches. Needless to say, this computer now runs XP and its programs better than it has any right to!

  • Cheap way to extend life of old PC.

This processor woke up my old 6 year old Emachine T6532 with an MSI motherboard. It is the fastest socket 939 processor they made. Your PC may need a BIOS upgrade to run it. Mine did not, but then I'd kept it up to date over the years. In addition to the processor, I upgraded my old, noisy EIDE disk to a new WD Green SATA disk. It is whisper quiet. I created three partitions on the new disk, one for Ubuntu Linux, one for Windows XP, and one for Linux swap. WD includes some software that allowed me to move the Windows from my old drive onto the new partition, so I didn't even have to reinstall Windows or any of my programs. The processor works great for both Linux and Windows. Windows recognized it and installed the necessary drivers and software automatically, which allows it to ...

  • Waiting for the cure

I just bought 2 of these. One to upgrade and old 3700 (o/c to 3.1 on air) and one to win a bet. My son bet me the "Old Guy" couldn't build an "antique" computer out of used parts that would run Crysis at full. Is he in for a surprise. I got the ADV which is the overclocking king of the X2s and Fx's and loaded it onto a Dfi Lanboy ultra SLI featuring 2xXFX 8800GTX oc with the factory watercooling and 4GB of Geil PC3200 (totally reliable high OCer for 939 boards). Add to that a dual loop and I am ready to win a bet and take names. Now I am waiting for the TIM to cure. Old doesn't have to mean obsolete. Of course, if you are a serious gamer and would rather spend well over $4000 for an I7 set up, go right ahead

  • Nice system improvement

This was a great way to double the number of processors in my older system. The performance increase is noticable and well worth the upgrade cost. I didn't need the fan that came with the CPU, but the heat transfer grease did allow me to complete the installation without having to source that component. Beware that the old grease can harden and have very strong adhesion to the old CPU - I managed to bend a few pins on the original CPU once the bond between the chip and the fan finally gave way....

  • Reincarnation

Brought new life to an old computer! I bring new life to old computers by installing Linux operating systems...this was a double bump!
