Incredible anthology of incredible and never to be duplicated guitar and synth axe playing
I had no idea that AH had put out that many albums in his lifetime. Velvet Darkness is missing but I could not ever get into that one anyway. AH was a session musician on a lot of recordings from those glorious days of prog rock/jazz rock fusion. None of that is represented here other than his signature sound. AH was a guitarist's guitarist. Very technical and not for eveyone. This is a great collection and would probably be impossible to put together separately. Oddly enough I chose the live disc THEN! as the first one to listen to. It would not play in my Marantz CDP. NO DISC error. Played fine in outboard optical drive on laptop. I was able to rip and burn a disc using NERO that came with optical drive and it plays fine in Marantz CDP. This tells me the THEN! disc had not ... A must for any collector, or anyone not familiar with the breadth of Allan's impact on music and the guitar. From emotional depth and ethereal orchestrations, to full on blowing, encompassing jazz, rock, fusion and just plain beauty, Allan transcends all of his contemporaries. This is not a "best guitarist ever" collection, as Al cringed at those types of monikers, but a crystal clear look into the mind of a true original. Allan's music was life changing for me, and for many of his followers. Be sure to check out the upcoming vinyl release as well. Cheers! The music itself is excellent, one of a kind, by one of the greatest guitarists that ever walked the planet! Here is all his solo works (-1) packed in a very nice box with every cd in nice vinyl replica covers. The sound has also been given a great upgrade, so even if you already own this material in other formats I think it would be worth it to get this box set. I concider it a must for every Allan Holdsworth fan out there!The music itself is excellent, one of a kind, by one of the greatest guitarists that ever walked the planet!
