  • Speaking Frank(ly)

Frank McCourt is an accomplished raconteur, and this entertaining anecdotal history of his 30 years as a New York City English teacher showcases his talents while enlightening its listeners about the realities of public education. Replete with dry, self-effacing humor, funny and poignant stories from the “trenches,” and candor and charm, he demonstrates why educational theory falls woefully short of preparing teachers for the classroom. McCourt’s dysfunctional family and difficult childhood, amply attested to in his earlier books, Angela’s Ashes and ‘Tis are rehashed here as something he’d been naïve enough to think would give him an edge with his inner city students if theory failed. But being sympatico does not make him equal to the food fight he experiences on his first day of ...

  • Another Great Book from McCourt

Teacher Man is another great book from Frank McCourt, after Angela's Ashes and 'Tis. This follows him through his years as an English and writing teacher in high schools around New York City. It is hilarious at times, but is also a wonderful commentary on the relationship between teacher and student, the trials most teachers face in and outside the classroom, and the struggles of an Irish immigrant trying to overcome his low self-esteem and his "miserable childhood." The audio book is read by McCourt, which gives it intimacy, personality and humor. He is a great story-teller, and this book is just another great example.

  • Teacher Man by Frank McCourt

Sorry, this biography was just boring. A self-serving recount of development and experiences of an educator. I listened to unabridged audiobook. Reader was fine but content did not appeal to me or resonate with my personal experiences as an educator. This despite the fact I throughly enjoyed "Five People You Meet in Heaven" by same author.

  • Best memoir ever!!

McCourt writes the best memoirs ever!!
