Fieldbook 1967 BSA Scouting outdoors manual
The Fieldbook is the main outdoor manual for Boy Scout youth. After the Boy Scout Handbook, this is the most possessed book by Boy Scouts. Despite being a BSA manual, it can be easily be read & used by those not in BSA. The title page says the book is for Boy Scouts, Explorers, Scouters, Educators, & Outdoorsmen. It is a great reference & teaching manual for those interested in the outdoors. The book is divided into chapters, covering a range of topics, including map and compass, woods tools, ropework, watercraft, conserving resources, weather, & astronomy. The 1967 version was the 2nd edition. The 1967 copyright has a Library of Congress Catalog Card Number of 67-14537 & a BSA catalog # of 3201. There is 1 prior edition & 2 succeeding editions. The 6th-14th printings (1973-1983) have a photo on the cover with yellow trim. The 1967 version is full of black & white photographs, as well as informative illustrations. The Fieldbook's 1st edition was published in 1944, with several printings until 1959. It was written by James E. West & William Hillcourt. It had a brown cover (BSA catalog # 3649). In 1984, the 3rd edition came out with a green cover (BSA catalog # 33200). In 1998, national promised a completely revised Boy Scout Handbook. The new handbook would be slimmed down by removing much of the outdoor information, which could be found in the fieldbook. A new fieldbook was promised in 1998, but it was not until 2004 that the 4th edition was finally released, complete with color coded sections, vivid photographs, & webpage cross-references. The 4th edition has a toned, orange to black, cover (BSA catalog # 33104). Mint copies are hard to find since these books were often taken on adventures in the outdoors. I often took my fieldbook as a youth (a 3rd edition) with me. My father went on outings with a 1st edition as a youth & a 2nd edition as a Scoutmaster. Most of these manuals sold online have seen some use. However, they were often better kept care of & held on to longer, by those that have used them, than many other Scout manuals. 1st printings of any edition of book tend to be more sought after. A 1st printing of the 2nd edition in 1967 should be counted among this category.

I gave an older copy to a Scoutmaster who had one when he was a Scout youth, and this evening to another Scoutmaster who was excited to see it, as she was going through some pages. She said she'll have her daughter, a Senior Patrol Leader, look at it as well. Great book!
