Divorce Lawyers at Work offers a rich, vivid account of the changingnature of family law practice. It will be invaluable to those interested inunderstanding the legal profession and the operation of the legal system, wartsand all, in one of the most emotionally fraught legal arenas. It also would bean excellent companion to anyone suffering the travails of divorce--and anaccurate (if sometimes unflattering) mirror of the lawyers who representthem."--Richard E. Abel, Connell Professor of Law, UCLA, "This topic is of great interest to not only those concerned with the practice of law, but also with broader social welfare interests in the management of the divorce process, and with a sociological interest in the development and pressures on the legal profession. The authors are in thefirst rank in their field, and write with clarity and authority. Their book is an important contribution to the field."--Mavis Maclean, Director, Oxford Center for Family Law Policy, Divorce Lawyers at Work offers a rich, vivid account of the changing nature of family law practice. Synopsis
How do lawyers think about and make the important decisions that constitute the day-to-day practice of law? This book explores that question through an extensive empirical study of lawyers practicing divorce law in New England. The authors emphasize the importance of "collegial control" in shaping lawyers' decisions and identify a variety of "communities of practice" that serve as key agents of that control. Offering a new understanding of the nature of lawyers' work in divorce law as well as a new perspective on legal professionalism, this book is required reading for scholars, students, and practitioners., The authors look at how divorce lawyers actually work to address the question of legal professionalism in practice. Through a detailed and systematic study of legal practice at the micro level, they show how lawyers create their own controls over work through their social relationships, formal and informal norms, common knowledge, and shared values. While much of the research on legal professionalism centers on the formal standards of the bar as reflected in codes of professional responsibility, Mather et al. show how the discretionary judgments that lawyers make, and the choices they face, are actually understood in relation to norms and standards of other lawyers with whom they interact or compare themselves.

This was a paperback/softcover 29 year old book I purchased in very good condition as described. However it was delivered in a plain white plastic envelope. They should have at least used a bubble pack lined shipping envelope for protection of the item inside. They should re-think their shipping & packaging strategies, especially with much much older delicate items. Other wise no problems whatsoever with seller. Recommended seller. A+
