Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000 is similar to the original 1982 Zaxxon arcade game in that players fly their ship from an isometric perspective, and the object is to avoid obstacles and gunfire while shooting enemy ships, gun turrets, and other objects. However, instead of being able to fly in eight directions, you can only move left, right, forward and backward, as the screen scrolls slowly westward. A giant boss appears at the end of each of the nine levels.<br><br>After 50 years of harmonious bliss, the Hive Confederation is under attack. The Ginglii, one of the Hive's most powerful clans, have separated from the Confederation and assembled a central computer capable of mass destruction. Using this sophisticated weapons system, the Ginglii have overtaken several planets and have enslaved many of the Hive insectoid races. As the pilot of a Stinger ship (the only vessel capable of penetrating the defense forces of the central computer), the fate of the entire Confederation rests in your hands.<br><br>Throughout the game, the Hive will send you couriers, special ships in which the Stinger can dock. Each of the five special ships vary in speed, armor strength and types of firepower. When you come upon a new courier ship, simply hop your Stinger right into it. Not only will this give you armor and additional weaponry, but you'll also get bonus points every time you dock. With a little practice, you can even dock in and commandeer certain enemy ships!<br><br>In addition to the standard mode of play, Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000 features a two-player game in which players engage in a simple shoot-out. Here you must dodge enemy fire and avoid obstacles, such as falling trees and crawling space slugs. The winner is the first contestant to destroy the other player's Stinger five times.
