In the 1960s, Osamu Tezuka's ASTRO BOY became the first Japanese manga to be adapted into an anime series. This 2003 version offers a modern sci-fi update while still retaining the original's classic style (as well as incorporating some of the darker elements of the 1980s remake). The series follows a superhero robot named Astro, who lives in the "retro-futuristic" Metro City. Originally created by research scientist Dr. Tenma in the image of his deceased son, Astro was discarded with the scientist's realization that his son could never be replaced. Later discovered by the kindly Dr. O'Shay, Astro was revived and given a robot family, while O'Shay served as his mentor in the belief that humans and robots can and should get along with each other. Astro, however, is not like other robots--in addition to his superior strength and jet-rocket arms and legs, his brain is the most advanced in the world and is capable of feeling all human emotions. Astro is a reluctant superhero, fighting to keep the peace between robots and humans, and always coming to the city's rescue against all manner of nefarious evildoers. This collection presents the series in its entirety.

Despite it's faults, still belongs in a fan's collection at the right price
There are lots of copies of this series available, usually for under $25 because it wasn't received very well when first on the air. In fact less than half of the episodes were ever seen before the series was canceled for its US broadcast. Perhaps the misguided dub and edit job performed on the original Japanese version to create the English language version was to blame. I can list the "sins" committed by the US producers: 1: The original was filmed in a 16:9 wide screen format, the US DVD was cut in a pan&scan 4:3 format as this was released just prior to the digital TV conversion. Some subtle bits are lost as a result, such as cameo's by a Tezuka character in the edge of the frame. 2: The original music was replaced by a rescored version. If you've ever watched Japanese version of these episodes on Youtube you will know what you're missing. 3: The fact of Dr. Tenma being Astro's father (and for that mater Tobio's father) is deemphasized, and Atlas's origin as a human boy is also discarded. Some scenes depicting Tobio's demise have been cut. In fact something like 5-10% of the total footage in the Japanese version was left behind in this release. 4: An entire episode from the Japanese version was left out and replaced with a badly hobbed together hodgepodge replacement made from bits and pieces of other episodes. The missing story, "Eternal Boy" was based on "Peter Pan". Perhaps Sony was worried about Disney's copyrights, but given that Disney ripped off Tezuka by stealing 'Kimba' to make the 'Lion King', Sony should have flipped Disney the bird and released this story to the US anyway! Having said all of this, the 2003 version of Astro Boy is very well animated, and the story lines are pretty good. It's still worthwhile owning, especially if you can find it for around $25 with shipping (which is common on ebay). True this was made after Tezuka Osmau died, but the Japanese producers were fairly faithful to his original interpretation. They've even introduced some original characters to the Astro Boy story arc from other manga and anime characters in Tezuka's Star System, Reno for example. Until an English language subtitled release of the original Japanese language one is available (there are some poor quality bootleg versions out there now from China and other East Asia countries) this DVD set belongs in every Astro Boy fan's collection. It is a bit of a disappointment for the reasons I mentioned, but still worth getting at the right price.
