About this product

Product Information

Paul Thomas Anderson follows 1999's MAGNOLIA with the intensely compelling character study PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE. Barry Egan (Adam Sandler) is a quiet, shy, socially awkward man with an office in an out-of-the-way warehouse. He is dedicated to his job as a wholesale toilet plunger salesman, he keeps a nice apartment, and he is obsessed with special offers on grocery store products. Barry's latest fixation is on frequent flier miles included with the purchase of Healthy Choice foods. Barry wears a bright blue suit, though he doesn't know why. With seven outspoken sisters, Barry is constantly being nagged, questioned, and berated. He is challenged to explain the reasons for his actions, and it eventually becomes clear that Barry cannot control his often-violent impulses, a trait which is increasingly problematic. When a beautiful woman, Lena Leonard (Emily Watson), walks into his life with an instinctive attraction to him, a nonjudgmental attitude, and unconditional love, Barry undergoes a powerful transformation. Anderson's film is a tour-de-force for which he garnered the Best Director award at Cannes 2002. Set primarily in Los Angeles and Utah, he shoots either bleak deserted spaces (apartment building hallways) or lush, exotic paradises (Hawaii). Aiming for a Technicolor look, the blue of Barry's suit in contrast with Lena's solid pinks, reds, and whites, pops off of the screen. Colorful interludes designed by visual artist Jeremy Blake offer hallucinogenic lapses from the action of the film, while the rapid percussive score by Jon Brion keeps the suspense and the emotional exasperation of the film on a constantly high level.

  • Serious - But Bad!

Punch Drunk Love" starring Adam Sandler, newly releasesd on DVD in a two-disc set with a second disc of useless extras. Sandler gives a serious performance as a man tormented by all sorts of issues: his seven bossy sisters, his own self-loathing, and a phone sex company that harasses him and tries to extort money from him after he has a conversation with a young lady on a lonely night. He stumbles into love with one of his sisters friends, and he finds new strength from his relationship with her. There are some great performances from supporting cast member Philip Seymour Hoffman, as the sleazy owner of the mattress/phone sex company. The movie moves along at a leisurely pace, and does drag in certain areas, even though the movie is only 94 ...

  • Punch-Drunk Love

This movie was, in two words, entirely unique. They're promoting it as a 'romantic comedy' -- because there's no category called 'psychotic affair with undertones of love and violent outbursts'. Much like Magnolia (the director's previous film), this is unlike any film you've ever seen. Adam Sandler does an excellent job of playing an unremarkable plunger salesman -- Barry Egan. There is nothing special about this guy. He has the odd phobia, and is a little paranoid and superstitious, but is generally an all-around nice guy... if a little temperamental. An average American. He is also painfully lonely; so much so, in fact, that one day he calls a 1-800 sex line just so he can talk to someone... The soundtrack & audio in the film are integral to the experience of it, which is ...

  • Adam Sandler emerges from his swamp of dumb movies!

Finally!! Adam Sandler does a movie that means something! Punch Drunk Love proves that Adam Sandler can act, who knew? The acting will hook you in. Philip Seymour Hoffman and Emily Watson join forces again (Red Dragon) to bring us one of the strangest love stories of our time. Adam Sndler plays a socially akward person with fits of rage due to having 7 sisters, then he meets Emily Watson and falls in love. While all of this is going on Sandler has to battle a bunch of crazed lunatics from a Phone Sex line that Sandler gets ripped off by. I will disclose no more details but I will say that the story is great and the acting is super! This movie is funny on top of being a serious drama. The real treat is the cinematography. This movie is a breath of fresh air to Adam Sandler and to movies in ...

  • Sweet, Odd love story

I loved this movie! Adam Sandler plays Barry Egan, a lonely, hapless salesman in a blue Technicolor suit. He's spent his life being crushed under the boot heels of bullies, his busy-body sisters (who torture him in ways that only siblings can)and life in general. For all of his kindness and his ability to offer love (and receive it) Barry remains lost. Until, he meets *her* and whether he likes it or not, things are going to change for Barry Egan... The best way to describe this movie is to say that it's almost like a fairy-tale. It shouldn't be taken seriously at all. It's just a kooky love story that speaks to that lonely underdog in all of us.

  • Great movie!

The Superbit titles utilize a special high bit rate digital encoding process which optimizes video quality while offering a choice of both DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. These titles have been produced by a team of Sony Pictures Digital Studios video, sound and mastering engineers and comes housed in a special package complete with a 4 page booklet that contains technical information on the Superbit process.
