    Magnificent film

    This period piece is a magnificent study of a street mask performer and his search for an apprentice. His craft is dying and as he ages, out of desperation, relents to a girl to study the craft of the mask. Beautifully filmed and acted.

    An insightful film of traditions and cultural ideologies that sometimes result in tragic consequences. A genuine pleasure to watch. This one will tug at your heartstrings. "The King of Masks'' is about the development of a close friendship plagued by hardship. Don't look for predictability in this moving tale set in the streets of Sichuan province during the late 1930s. There's plenty of charm, a colorful arena, and a satisfying conclusion.
