About this product

Product Information

In this riveting look at military life during the Vietnam conflict, Stanley Kubrick, who made the powerful antiwar classics PATHS OF GLORY (WWI) and DR. STRANGELOVE (the Cold War), once again explores the behavior of men in battle. FULL METAL JACKET (1987), adapted from Gustav Hasford's novel THE SHORT TIMERS, is broken down into two very different parts. The first half of the film focuses on the training of a squad of Marine grunts on Parris Island, and more specifically on the troubled relationship between the brutal drill sergeant (a frightening Lee Ermey) and an oafish misfit (a brilliant Vincent D'Onofrio) who just happens to be a sharpshooter. The second half takes the grunts to Hue City, where the climactic battle of the 1968 Tet Offensive--and the turning point of the Vietnam War--took place. The story is told through the eyes of Private Joker (Matthew Modine), a cynical aspiring photojournalist who is forced to fight for his life and the lives of his fellow recruits. Unusually for Kubrick, FULL METAL JACKET emerged at a time when a trend for films about Vietnam was in full swing. PLATOON had proceeded Kubrick's film by a year, and lesser efforts such as HAMBURGER HILL also emerged in 1987. London's abandoned docklands may not be the most obvious choice of location to replicate the ravages of the Vietnam landscape, but this is where Kubrick shot the film, sticking to his dogged principles of not shooting outside his adopted home. A moving commentary on the dehumanizing process that occurs when soldiers prepare and engage in battle, FULL METAL JACKET is an unforgettable experience from one of the most original voices to ever pick up a movie camera.

    Full Metal Jacket

This movie starts out in basic training for Marines and then goes to depict war. This movie is fiction, it is based in reality of the Marines and the brain washing that has to take place to create a fighting force that are killing machines in battle. I have been told by military members that this is depicted as true... but is a fictionalized story. It is a hard movie to watch as it has a suicide scene in it as well as hard war scenes. I do recommend anyone who would like to know what it is like to join and go induction and the battle... for men or women, friends and family.

  • Full Metal Jacket

I had seen the movie "Full Metal Jacket" several times on television. I decided to purchase my own copy because this film has become the classie film about the Vietnam War. Since I grew up during this time, it has personal significance as well as historical significance. It was also important to own the film directed by the stellar Stanley Kubrick. He was a tough director, in that he always took so long to make his films and insisited on many takes but the brilliance clearly shows through. I also bought the film because I am in awe of the incredible actor, Vincent D'Onofrio. Though this was his first commercial film, he just knew exactly where he wanted to take Pyle and did it superbly. There are many other great performances as well. Perhaps the best reason to purchase the ...

  • Full Metal Jacket DVD REVIEW* CLASSIC HARDCORE VIETNAM

With Vietnam in full swing, and a couple of commrades drafted into the beloved Marine Corps, Kubrick brings a rare perspective to the war pyscologically with this self titles war/drama/action film. First taking us into the depths of Boot Camp in Paris Island, South Carolina, characters such as "The Joker", "Snowball", "Cowboy", and the infamous "Private Pile" (Leonard), in which tells of the horrors and realitys of what men can do when pushed into the corners of society and driven into a war filled with politics and people that dont wish to truly be apart of such a war. It doesnt follow soilders per say it follows journalist. The Journalist going aorund learning the truths of the war and why they are apart of it as well as the cruel situations of survival a person must endure in war as ...

  • U N F O R G E T T A B L E

This movie grips you by the sack immediately, and never lets go. Yes, there is a distinctly different flavor between the first half of the movie (during basic training) and the second half (in combat). This movie made R Lee Ermey a star and a legend, and justly so. As the extra-salty drill instructor, he plies his real-life military expertise to perfection. He absolutely OWNS the first half of the movie, and you can't help but admire him. The second half of the movie is, again, a story unto itself. The grunts have moved from boot camp to the field and full-on combat. Shocking. Gritty. Real. This part of the movie makes a lot of people uncomfortable because it is a very accurate portrayal, but man, it's disturbing and touching. I admit it freely ... for the sheer pleasure of it, I watch ...

  • Pretty good, but not as great as I was expecting

I watch a lot of movies and I think I understand what I like and how that fits with what most people like and dislike, and the difference between "expert" and "lay" reviews. The movie was so positively rated by everyone, I really had high expectations. Don't misunderstand me, I did enjoy it, just wasn't bowled over. Some classic lines jumped out at me that I have heard (other movies drawing off of this one). Maybe I'm not as in tune with "the majority" as I thought I was. I'll just say that I usually can watch a movie I like, or think has merit, several times to give it a fair chance. I watched this once and haven't been motivated to watch it again. So I'm saying, it was pretty good, but I don't see that ratings it has being supported.
