About this product

Product Information

In the midst of World War II, as the tide turns against the Axis, a German U-boat crew is sent out to patrol the Atlantic and fire at Allied ships bringing supplies to England. The submarine also carries a press correspondent, there to report from the front lines of nautical warfare. Meanwhile, the crew's captain (Jürgen Prochnow) is becoming disillusioned with the Nazi regime and with war in general. What starts out as a routine mission is soon livened up beyond the crew's expectations when their boat's surprise attack on a convoy is thwarted by a fast-moving destroyer. Battered by depth charges, the crew must pull together to survive the attacks of their unseen enemy.Widely considered to be director Wolfgang Petersen's best film and one of the finest German films ever made, DAS BOOT is stunningly realistic in its portrayal of the cramped conditions aboard a German submarine. Based on a novel by Lothar G. Buchheim, it is a striking example of an intelligent antiwar film clothed in the guise of a military thriller.

Realism is the key word in this film. Forget that the Germans were enemies and concentrate on the human drama. These sailors were just a bunch of guys serving their nation, just like our guys. Put yourself in a cramped metal cylinder under water with no place to go while depth charges try to snuff out your life. You think of home and wonder if you will ever see it again. You survive the ordeal of combat, war of nerves and return to a welcoming band. But your grand pat on the back moment is shattered by Allied bombers who sink the boat you've come to love and respect for getting you back home. A loved one is lost. Dreams are shattered when you realize the war is about over, and all your super human efforts went for nothing. This is a great movie of real life without fairy tales.

  • THE BOAT...DAS BOOT

MY HUSBAND HAD SEEN THIS MOVIE YEARS AGO AND REMEMBERED THEY HAD TO EAT RATS TO SURVIVE WHEN THE SUB GOT STUCK UNDER THE SEA...HE WAS TALKING ABOUT IT AND I DECIDED TO LOOK IT UP...AND THERE IT WAS...SO WE WATCHED...ME FOR 1ST TIME, HIM AGAIN YEARS LATER... IT WAS ACTION..FEAR...SUSPENSE..AND HERO'S...BUT WHAT I LIKED THE MOST... IS IT WAS THE OTHERSIDE OF THE WAR TO SEE ALL HUMANS WITH THE SAME FEARS, JOYS, AND REASONS FOR LIVING...IT WAS A GREAT MOVIE...EVEN AFTER ALL THESE YEARS...IT HOLDS IT'S OWN...I DON'T SAY THIS OFTEN [WHEN IT COMES TO MOVIES ANYWAY]..MY HUSBAND WAS RIGHT...WORTH WATCHING...

  • Editors exist for a reason.

The next movie that someone should make is, "Who is killing the great editors of Hollywood." This version of Das Boot is good because it is as close to the theatrical release as you can get. You can watch the Directors cut if you like to suffer. I never made it out to sea when I tried to watch that movie. This version is fast paced and exciting like the movie is supposed to be. It is unfortunate that you cannot get it on DVD.

  • The Boat

Good movie as real as it should be great action and great charcters playing in it. More real than any war movie made in the US.
