About this product

Product Information

Beginning with a documentary style that immediately hooks the viewer, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, based on the Harry Bates short story "Farewell to the Master," becomes as much a human interest story as it does a sci-fi B-movie classic. The film soberly depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. After being shot at by ignorant, panicky military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C., hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but frank Major White (Robert Osterloh) to gather all the world's leaders so he can tell them more specifically what he has come 250 million miles to warn them about. Losing patience, Klaatu slips into the human world, adapting a false identity and living at a boarding house where he meets a smart woman with a conscience, Helen Benson (Patricia Neal), and her inquisitive son, Bobby (Billy Gray). Both mother and son soon find themselves embroiled in the complex mystery of Klaatu, his message, and the government's witch hunt for the alien. Made during the cold war--when Americans were obsessed with the destructive capabilities of the atomic bomb--THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, thanks to its beautiful pacing, excellent dialogue, and haunting score by Bernard Herrmann, is still a treat for contemporary audiences.

  • Plot embodies good moral conduct!

This is a movie I saw as a child and it has stuck with me all these years later. It has everything. Fear, suspense, family, martians! space ships, awesome props, love, friendship (Between Gort the robot and boy) and a great story. Ebay is probably the only source for this this movie but if you find this movie for sale and are a 50s/60s space movie freak or like things that are out of the ordinary, you will love The Day The Earth Stood Still.

  • Original-The day The Earth Stood Still Circa 1950's

This was my favorite movie as a kid and have always enjoyed watching it. I had it once and then misplaced it, so I bought it again! The characters portrayed in the film captured the essence of the time and fears, in which they lived. It endeavored to stretch the closed minds of those who lived in the 1950's away from the idea that the earth was the only place life exsisted. It did a great job in awakening american cinema to the possibility that alien life exsists and that it may be far in advance of our own. truly a classic film.

  • The day the earth stood still

One of the best old sci-fi movies ever, very believeable and exciting action and suspence for it's age.Good actors, great cast you even get aunt" BEE Taylor" from the old Andy Griffith show!I still think there out there somewhere.

  • Everything about this film is top notch!

This movie makes most of today's special-effects- heavy blockbusters look amateur. Everything is top notch in this one. Michael Rennie is very convincing as the alien visitor who shows compassion for the people of Earth who are advancing too quickly in war technology for their own good. Patricia Neal is also good in her role of mother to a son who spends time with the mysterious stranger Mr. Carpenter. The special effects in this film were beyond anything seen at the time and continue to be impressive to this day, considering that this film was made in 1951. They are not too flashy; they are subtle enough that viewers are not distracted and they will actually make you think more about the power that the giant robot Gort wields. The phrase "he could destroy the world" holds special meaning ...
