A great read!!
When I was growing up in the late 60's, we were being bombarded with spies everywhere. On the movies there was James Bond, on TV we had the Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Girl from U.N.C.L.E. and Get Smart. Marvel Comics has always been able to follow a trend and this was no exception. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby put their minds together again and created Nick Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. They decided to recycle a now aging Sgt Fury, making him Colonel and build a spy agency around him. The results could be no more than spectacular. They started this feature on Strange Tales sharing the book with Dr. Strange. This book starts on issue 150 of Strange Tales but you don't have to look for the earlier issues to catch up. Colonel Fury is a brash, hothead, impulsive agency director who takes a ... Colonel Fury is a brash, hothead, impulsive agency director who takes a direct approach in the spy business. He fights an evil agency named HYDRA who's purpose is complete domination of the world. Even though it seems you have seen this plot before, you haven't. For one, in the 007 movies and TV the director (or chief) of the agency is a desk job. Nick Fury in in the thick of things and he cannot bear the thought of being a desk jockey. Stan and Jack after a while had to hand this feature because as we all know there were pretty much running the Marvel Universe. After a one issue by John Buscema, the assignment was given to a young Jim Steranko on inks and after a few issues Stan gave Steranko the complete run of the book. He wrote, drew and inked S.H.I.E.L.D. until it was spun off on its own title. This book reprints issues 150 to 168 of Strange Tales and is a great read. Not even James Bond can carry as many weapons and gadgets in a suit like Nick Fury can. The tech guys at S.H.I.E.L.D. can miniaturize anything in a suit for weapons for their director including in his famous eye patch. Jim Steranko took this book to another level that made Stan and Jack proud. Not just in the writing, but in the dynamic, modern, futuristic and innovative art, Steranko kept growing professionally in leaps and bounds after every issue. I can see why so many artists were influenced by him.
