Earth sends terraforming machines to Mars to let the onrush of time do its work, turning the planet green. Next they send humans...and immediately get back an emissary with thousands of years of stories to tell about the settling of Mars. Then Earth's probes reveal that an identical barrier has appeared around Mars. Jason, desperate, seeds near space with self-replicating machines that will scatter copies of themselves outward from the sun--and report back on what they find. Life on Earth is about to get much, much stranger.

As much a human novel as sci fi
Characters were so developed and finely drawn, I was surprised this was done in a genre which required so much time given to the science aspect of the fiction. Would have rated as excellent except I have an unfulfilled appetite for "hard" science fiction. In particular first human contact with an intelligence that isn't even remotely human nor of remotely human derivation. Not interested in aliens coming to destroy us (or wanting to do so after encountering us), but in the discovery, the encounter, the process of finding a way to comprehend the other. Won't say in what way this novel doesn't fill that bill as it would be in some way a spoiler. A great read!
Intense, involved plus I added scientific words to my vocabulary! The author has an amazing creative mind. This book makes you wonder what is out there in the universe.
