About this product

Product Information

Sampson, George, and Rameck could easily have followed their childhood friends into drugdealing, gangs, and prison. Like their peers, they came from poor, single-parent homes in urban neighborhoods where survival, not scholastic success, was the priority. When the three boys met in a magnet high school in Newark, they recognized each other as kindred spirits who wanted to overcome the incredible odds against them and reach for opportunity. They made a friendship pact, deciding together to take on the biggest challenge of their lives: attending college and then medical school. Along the way they made mistakes and faced disappointments, but by working hard, finding the right mentors, separating themselves from negative influences, and supporting each other, they achieved their goals--and more. In We Beat the Street , award-winning YA author and teacher Sharon Draper brings the doctors' childhood, teenage, and young-adult anecdotes vividly to life. Brief "conversations" with the doctors at the end of each chapter provide context and advice in a friendly, nonintrusive way. Youngsters will be captivated by the men's honest accounts of the street life that threatened to swallow them up, and how they helped each other succeed beyond their wildest expectations.

Super impressed with this seller! They had the best price by far for this book! Both the cost of the book and the shipping fee was far better than average! The book came exactly as described, it was well packaged and quite a bit earlier than expected! The seller was polite and replied quickly to my messages. I’ll definitely make another purchase soon! Thank you to the seller! Be safe and keep up the great work!

WONDERFUL book! Better than described, in just like new condition [not just good]. Packaged very carefully, shipped very securely. Great seller, would buy from again in a heartbeat! No communication occurred, but I imagine it would have been as good as the rest of their customer service. Very happy with purchase, thank you very much!

  • The Street

Sharon M. Draper stands as one of my favorite authors so far. Her triology which includes Tears of a Tiger, Forged By Fire & Darkness Before Dawn, all portray descriptive imagery, which gives you a sense as if the characters are almost real. Reading the books made me feel close to each character and also helped me learn insight about myself. Ironically, when reading the book, some events occurred in my life, which was scary. We Beat the Street has great meaning and background worth discovering and I'm devoted and very ecstatic to commence reading this non-fiction novel.

  • We Beat The Street

I began reading the book at a library and wanted to finish the book. Book was a fast paced, enjoyable, easy read. I think it would be a great book for teens and their parents to read. This is not the first time I have bought a book on ebay. Ebay is a great place to find out of print books and movies.
