So inexpensive, its worth having a spare!

I received the first 21D64-2 ignitor in a control board kit. I used it to replace the old 80V ignitor. That was over 5 years ago. Its burning bright to this day doing its job of igniting natural gas. I purchased a second identical unit as a spare, since nothing lasts for ever. I expect that it will perform much the same as the first, if I end up needing it during the life of my furnace (its almost 15 years old). The ignitor is a low cost unit, and seems a great value, and as such it makes sense to own a spare. The plumbing and heating repairman will drop by after midnight on a holiday and replace your burned out one for 16X the price of one of these. If you can wield a screwdriver, and apply a couple wire splices, you can install this.

    Looking for a better replacement

This ignitor was already in the c.1995 natural gas hot water boiler (house heat) when I bought the house 12 years ago. These ignitors only last two-three years. I've started keeping a few in stock. The most recent failure was "fail soft" meaning that it barely lit the burner--sometimes there was delayed ignition and a pretty loud boom. The cold resistance is rated at 8-15 ohms, but "failed-soft" was 55 ohms (with a magnifying glass, a partial crack in the ceramic could be seen). Has anyone found a more rugged replacement that is about the same physical size and 120 VAC rated?

  • Great part to have on hand for a quick repair for a bad ignitor.

These are great. I always keep on "in stock" at my house. Then when the igniter goes out, I can have my furnace back up and working in a half hour. This is a quick and easy repair and saves a service call. (This, of course, assumes you have some amount of mechanical aptitude and knowledge about how a gas furnace works. I assume no responsibility for you blowing yourself up.) Igniters WILL go bad. They sit in the flame always, so they will eventually burn through. I know that is true of the flat ones. They get brittle and crack. Maybe this new style will last longer.

  • Does it's job.

This igniter is replacing a Robertshaw 41-413 that goes to a Carlin G3B burner. I had to make my own brackets for it, but I knew that when I bought it. The OEM Robertshaw igniter is almost twice the money and generally lasts less than 2 years. The Hot Rod has a 5 year warranty. We'll see how it goes. So far so good.

  • Not quite universal but a good value.

Not quite universal but a good value. I had to drill my access hole out to fit the igniter, but for minimal effort I got a much better igniter ( hope it lasts longer than the factory 2 years). It has more material, which I translate into longer life.
