Reviews
Tukmakov has created a unique symbiosis: a training book with stories. Qualifications such as brilliant or wonderful are really far too stale for this work. This book will most probably become a classic in chess literature., Tukmakov's discussion is a broad one, citing games dating from 1891 up 2011. Along the way the author peppers his survey with advice, tidbits and common sense, with strong writing and a balanced approach. An important book on a much-neglected topic., There is a lot of thought-provoking stuff in the book.--International Master Arthur van de Oudeweetering, ChessVibes, I really like this book. Tukmakov's discussion of the modern game is highly astute.--Grandmaster Luke McShane, Tukmakov has created a unique symbiosis: a training book with stories. Synopsis
Opening, middlegame and endgame are the three universally recognized stages of a game of chess, but what about the art of preparation? Winning starts with planning before the game, teaches legendary chess trainer Vladimir Tukmakov in this enlightening and entertaining work on a neglected subject.Exploring and understanding, prior to the game, the strengths and weaknesses of your next opponent and being aware of your own strong points and shortcomings, are a key to success. Tukmakov describes how planning has become a systematic process, how methodical preparation works, and which critical steps you have to take. The role of the computer in preparing for a game has grown tremendously, and Modern Chess Preparation explains how it is used by top players to get organized for success. But you will also learn the limitations on the use of chess engines and databases and how disastrous it can be to overly respect them and rely on them. A separate chapter is devoted on how to prepare for all-important games, games that will decide a tournament, a match or a even an entire career. Modern Chess Preparation is about more than just opening preparation. It also teaches you how to immerse yourself in order to find the best approach to the game. With powerful anecdotes and many instructive high-level games, Tukmakov explains how, as a competitive chess player, you can organize your homework, focus your efforts, and arrive at a viable game plan.Vladimir Tukmakov is a chess grandmaster and a former national champion of Ukraine. In his active career he won many tournaments as well as gold medals in international team competitions. He is universally acknowledged as an outstanding chess trainer and coach., Winning starts with planning before the game, teaches legendary chess coach Vladimir Tukmakov. In this ground-breaking book he shows how chess preparation has become a systematic process and how today's top players make their game plans. The most important aim of modern preparation, both for professionals and for ambitious amateurs, is to get a playable position that you understand better than your opponent. The role of the computer in preparation has grown tremendously and Tukmakov explains how top grandmasters use their 'Metal Friend'. He warns that professionals should not put too much trust in chess engines and should analyse more deeply themselves. Club players, on the other hand, should reduce their time in front of the machine to a minimum. Tukmakov explains what amateurs should do in order to arrive at the board well-armed: study the classics, analyse your own games without a computer, and know yourself. A special chapter is devoted to must-win situations: when the outcome of a tournament, a match or even a whole life depends on a single game. With lots of brilliant examples, inside information and amusing anecdotes, Modern Chess Preparation is not only highly instructive, but also a joy to read. Book jacket.

I had a very positive experience. I bought a 2 volume set and the books came as advertised, like new. They were extremely well packaged and arrived about 3 weeks prior to the scheduled delivery time frame. As if that were not enough, I had actually checked the box to pay a little extra for tracking info, without realizing that the seller was already including it in the price. After the purchase was completed, I got an email/note from the seller refunding me for the extra fee. Very honest.
