About this product

Product Information

Adventuresome gamers aim to eliminate a maniacal dictator -- for the good of humanity, as well as significant monetary compensation from the highest bidder. As its title suggests, Mercenaries puts players in the roles of soldiers for hire, who find ample opportunities for employment as an unexpected menace leads the nations of the world to the brink of disaster. In a quick and bloody coup, the prime minister of North Korea has been displaced by a power-hungry general called Sung, who now threatens the world with nuclear attack. In the role of an American, British, or Swedish soldier of fortune, players choose their patron and price, and then go to work at eliminating the 52 most wanted perpetrators of the new North Korean regime. Each target is assigned a different playing card, for easy reference.

Naturally, the threat of nuclear attack draws considerable international interest, and players may choose employment by such diverse entities as the United Nations, the U.S. Coalition, China, or the Russian Mafia, as they work to collect the 52 bounties which will complete the deck. While the employer may set the basic mission objectives, mercenaries decide for themselves how to get the job done once they're on location. The game features over 30 weapons and more than 20 different vehicles, including cars and trucks, planes, helicopters, and tanks, allowing players to reach their goals using the tactics and equipment of their choosing. Mercenaries' storyline features multiple possible endings, and the game's conclusion will depend on moral decisions made by the player's character throughout the various missions.

With the phenomenal success of Rockstar's 128-bit generation Grand Theft Auto games, the notion of "emergent gameplay" created a buzz among some game developers and journalists. The general idea is to present an open-ended world that reacts naturally and appropriately, no matter what players try to do or when they try to do it. The gameplay "emerges" from the game world itself. This style is prominent in contemporary games such as Jak II and Beyond Good & Evil, and according to the publisher, it's fundamental in the design of Mercenaries as well. Player characters are set loose in large "sandbox" levels, where they must choose how they'll accomplish goals in terms of the game world's overall dynamic, instead of by following a scripted series of events.

    Oldie but goodie.

If you have the opportunity to get this game, jump all over it. It’s an awesome older game, circa 2005. No the graphics aren’t gonna be as good as the latest Call of Duty, obviously. If older graphics don’t bother you then you must give this game a go. You shan’t be disappointed.

  • Above average sandbox game

THis is definently a like. I am not a very big fan of sandbox games like GTA , but this one has potential. There is enough story to keep the fires burning. Plus there are tons of things to do aside from the main missions. With the main objective being to capture your way up the deck of 52 you have a lot of options. The 4 different factions add a nice bit of variety especially if you try to play them of against one another. There is a great variety of weapons ranging from the m-16 to rocket launchers . grenades , flame throwers , .50 cals , tanks and helicopters. There is always a variety of Destructive forces at your fingertips. I also like the email log of mission that let you put the game down and come back to later without having to wonder what you were doing. All of the dialogue in ...

  • Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction

This game is for anyone who enjoys 3rd person action games, especially GTA fans. Though the enemy AI isn't that great, there are considerably more of them, so it can be a challenge at times. Being able to hijack any vehicle you see is awesome, especially if you're in the middle of an enemy camp! an improvement over the GTA series is the ability to call in reinforcements. These can be in the form of supplies, vehicles or airstrikes. the graphics good for a PS2/Xbox game, though i have to give special commendation for the explosion...wow, just wow!

  • BLOWN AWAY

Great free roaming FPS with lots of explosions that will blow you away. You decided which how to complete missions in your own style. You decided which factions you want to support (and get support from) and which ones you decide you don't like. This game will keep you busy for hours. Not only do you have missions to complete for different factions but you have the "Deck of 52" which will bring you big bucks. And with big bucks you get BIGGER EXPLOSIONS. This one won't leave my possession for some time. I never grow tired of massive explosions. You even bring down buildings. Not shacks! Not houses! BUT HUGE BUILDINGS! And you better get out of the way of the rubble or you may get hurt. And watch out for the friendly fire especially if you call on some assistance. Oh and did I ...

  • A great game

Probably one of the most underrated GOOD games made for the Xbox. I never heard a lot about it when it was new, and after a year or two, it had all but dropped off the face of the planet for all I could tell. Yet, this remains one of my all-time favorite games for the Xbox. With a unique sandbox-style play, it allows for hours of endless roaming about in various vehicles ranging from small, gun-toting jeeps to several styles of tanks to assault helicopters, as well as getting around on foot. The ability to call in over a dozen different kinds of airstrikes adds a very interesting element to the game, as do several different weapon and supply drops that allow you to order a package that suits your current battlefield needs. The main story of the game has you hunting for 52 different ...
