About this product

Product Information

Beloved by critics and readers alike for nearly 60 years, Mary O'Neill's timeless children's book of poetry is a tribute to the many beautiful colors we see around us, and is considered a modern children's classic. Featuring twelve beautiful poems, and deeply luminous illustrations, Hailstones and Halibut Bones is a perfect poetry addition to any home or classroom library. "An exploration in imaginative, evocative verses of the world of color and its relationship to the other senses." -- The New York Times Book Review (A Top Ten Distinguished Juvenile Book) "Has inspired young poets all over the country." -- Publishers Weekly "John Wallner has added rich drawings for this new edition, full of intense yellows, blues, orchids, and oranges. They complement O'Neill's whimsical poems." -- People "After more than twenty-five years, the poems, like colors, still sing . . . Kudos to Doubleday for letting Hailstones and Halibut Bones continue to live." -- School Library Journal

  • The title invites curiosity. Everyone who has seen this book asks about it. Of course, it is a line from one of the pages.

I have bought so many copies of this book, I should be getting a kickback! (Just kidding) I buy one for every niece/nephew and their children each time a new one is born. It's a remarkable book. One of my all time favorite books. The idea of representing color as sounds or feelings is compelling. The pictures are wonderful!! I have bought this book for newborns, toddlers, teens and adults. I find it uplifting and interesting.

It is good poetry and it is all about colors and feelings. This is a great gift for young families to read together!! My sister showed it to me. Neither one of us has small children anymore. I fell in love with this book and, l am holding on to it in anticipation of gran babies.

This is an adorable book of poems, perfectly describing all the wonders of color. It is a timeless classic that young and old will enjoy. This book was recommended to me by a school teacher who had received it as a child, and who has treasured it ever since.
