About this product

Product Information

A classic British spy mystery, and one of Hitchcock's best, THE 39 STEPS is the story of an innocent man who struggles to prove his innocence. Robert Donat gets more than he bargained for when he brings home a mysterious woman (Lucie Mannheim) who confesses to be a British agent on the hot trail of a dangerous spy ring. The woman is killed in Donat's apartment and he immediately finds himself on the run, burdened with the charge for her murder and the dangerous knowledge of her mission. The film is distinguished by its pioneering use of contrapuntal sound effects, as well as the dynamism between Donat and his costar Madeleine Carroll.

  • Classic Early Hitch!

The 39 Steps is based on a spy novel of the same title by John Buchan. While I only read part of it, now I would like to read the rest…regardless, the book, written in 1915, practically established the whole genre of the espionage story. I would argue that the movie does the same for the movie arena. The story is about a man named Hannay who takes home a perfect stranger of a woman after a show at a music hall only to have her explain that she’s a spy and the Professor—with a half a pinky—is after her. The next morning, she is found murdered. Thus begins a well-written and well-filmed set of adventures that culminates back at the very same music hall at the end of the movie. There are several major themes of the movie—the stage, obviously, music (in the tune Hannay keeps whistling), ...

  • Not quite good enough

I have this on VHS. Bought the DVD basically as backup in case the tape version died. Sorry to say the picture quality from the disk is not as good as from the ancient tape. Not blaming the vendor but not overjoyed at the result.
