About this product

Product Information

In Robert A. Heinlein's controversial Hugo Award-winning bestseller, a recruit of the future goes through the toughest boot camp in the Universe--and into battle against mankind's most alarming enemy... Johnnie Rico never really intended to join up--and definitely not the infantry. But now that he's in the thick of it, trying to get through combat training harder than anything he could have imagined, he knows everyone in his unit is one bad move away from buying the farm in the interstellar war the Terran Federation is waging against the Arachnids. Because everyone in the Mobile Infantry fights. And if the training doesn't kill you, the Bugs are more than ready to finish the job... "A classic...If you want a great military adventure, this one is for you."-- All SciFi

More than just an exciting sci-fi tale.

This book is exciting and written in a witty, if strange prose from an interesting perspective. It is very much a sci fi military novel. It has more military in it than I expected, but Heinlein did his research because it is a pretty accurate depiction of military service, even if slightly futuristic. The action is exciting, but a little vague. That action isn't all there is though. As you will read in most reviews, the controversial commentary on politic is probably the most interesting and compelling part. I think everyone should read this book. It is quite easy to read as well. The book itself is decent as a paperback. There are plenty of reprints so the cover art may vary.

  • Better than the film, arrived as promised.

I bought this because I am a fan of the Verhoeven movie adaptation, and I remember the book from when I was a kid and my older brother was reading it. Finally getting to it now as an adult, I find it compelling in storytelling and rich in ideas. The book was used but in very good condition. Just a small smudge of some kind of gunk on the cover, which I cleaned up easily with a spray of household cleaner. Am very satisfied.

  • The second time you read Starship Troopers look for the philosphy expressed

Robert Heinlein was a very complx author in that he was a great story teller, but also was one of the foremost philosophers of the twentieth century. In Starship Troopers, along with the fast paced, well written story, are the ethical proposals of responsibility and living by that philosophy. Note the teachings of Mr. (Colonel, ret.) DuBois and the exchanges with his students, especially upon the idea of "juvenile delinquincy", but most of all note that to obtain Citizenry and the right to vote, one had to have served in the military and had to have been willing to die for his or her beliefs. Perhaps we might do well to heed the thoughts and ideas expressed by Mr.Heinlein

  • Not your hollywood interpretation

I bought this book to replace a copy I had worn out from reading. Anyone who has seen the movie with the same name will not recognize anything of this book except some names and that they were fighting bugs. This book I would recommend to any sci-fi readers. Heinlein is usually an easy author to read and he builds up a detailed picture of his characters. From the first chapter where he describes a cap troopers "drop" this book is excellent.
